In Loving Memory of Jordan Morris

The SS United States Conservancy is deeply saddened by the passing of Jordan Morris, Chair of its Southeast US Chapter.

We will be planning a tribute to Jordan and will forward details shortly. In the meantime, fair winds and following seas to a larger-than-life Big U Champion. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jordan's family and friends far and wide.

Save the Date

The Conservancy is planning a special event in Philadelphia on July 30.

Stay tuned for more details!
Big U at School

The Conservancy congratulates Mae, a student in the 4th grade at Hawthorne Elementary School in Salt Lake City Utah, for sharing her wonderful "Personal Exploration" project.

She kicked off her final class presentation with this great line:
"The SS United States was not as famous as the Titanic, because she actually did her job."

We are always happy to hear about student projects on America's Flagship - the SS United States has quite a story to tell!

Big U In The Arts

We'd like to thank
Byron Huart and highlight his recent work featuring the SS United States.

Work by Huart was recently featured in the The Pancakes & Booze Art Show. You can see  paintings that include the Big U on Byron's Twitter Feed.

Historic Restorations Pave the Way

The USS Constitution recently began a $15 million restoration after being dry docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The routine restoration is being paid for by the US Navy and is performed every 15 to 20 years.

The South Street Seaport Museum's Wavertree also recently began a $10 million restoration at the Caddell Dry Dock and Repair. The project is being funded by the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs. It is the largest restoration project of it's kind in the United States.

We are very encouraged that these maritime restoration projects are now underway and that they are paving the way for the SS United States
Holocaust Survivor Reminisces about the SS United States

Holocaust survivor Sam Ponczak was recently featured in the Free Lance-Star after talking to Stafford County middle school students about his experiences in Nazi Germany and traveling to the United States.

"Ponczak said one of the happiest days of his life was coming into port of New York City in 1964 aboard the SS United States, the world's largest U.S.-built passenger liner. He stood on the deck and saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time."
