The story highlighted Conservancy Advisory Council member Casper van Hooren's work on the successful conversion of the SS Rotterdam, an encouraging model for the SS United States.  Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs and Conservancy supporter Charles Howland's incredible collection of artifacts from the SS United States were also featured.

Executive Director's Update

The SS United States endured some tough winter weather, and spring maintenance is now well underway.  Since acquiring the ship in 2011, the Conservancy has retained Philadelphia-based Atlantic Logistics to handle vessel security and upkeep. With over eighty years' experience in ship operations, the firm's "crew" is aboard the ship daily to ensure that - even in her current condition - "America's Flagship" is well protected and well maintained.  For example, workers recently replaced the ship's huge mooring lines and prepared to install new flashing on her exterior decks.  Remote cameras monitor the vessel around the clock. We are very grateful for Atlantic Logistics' continued commitment to the ship - which has included keeping their fees at the same level for over five years.

Major renovation and restoration of the SS United States - including priming and painting her iconic funnels - must occur in dry dock in conjunction with the ship's redevelopment. The Conservancy continues to work with its development partners, their extended team, and other interested parties as we advance those prospects for America's Flagship.

Thank you for your continued support and patience, as these redevelopment negotiations are sensitive, protracted, and complex. We will share more details as soon as we possibly can.

We hope you enjoy our new newsletter format, and as always, we welcome your input and thank you for your support as we continue to do everything possible to Save the SS United States.

"It Takes a Village" to Save a Ship!

The SS United States
remains afloat today only because so many people have rallied in support of America's Flagship.  From the Conservancy's advisory council, local chapter chairs, donors, board, staff, former passengers and crew, and active volunteers, our community is incredible.

Here are a few updates highlighting transitions and honors bestowed on key members of the Conservancy's "family:"

We salute and congratulate Dan McSweeney for his outstanding service as he departs his position as managing director of the SS United States Redevelopment Project and takes the helm of the United War Veterans Council.  We are very grateful that Dan will continue to serve on the Conservancy's board.

We also share an inspiring recap of the gala dinner at which Gerry Lenfest was awarded the NHMS Distinguished Service Award.
