Supporters Shatter $100,000 Matching-Donation Goal

In June, cruise industry executive Jim Pollin pledged to match up to $100,000 of new supporter donations to benefit the SS United States. Last week, the Conservancy announced that we were only $2,072 away from that $100,000 goal. Just one week later, we are thrilled to announce that we have received $122,167 in donations eligible for matching -- prompting Jim to raise his initial pledge by $20,000, and match $120,000!

"Our nation's flagship isn't just an historic vessel," Jim Pollin said recently. "It also represents the people of a great and determined nation that once again have demonstrated they can rise to any challenge. In response to the generosity of so many supporters of the SS United States, I am proud to match their recent contributions with an additional donation of $120,000 to save this enduring symbol of our country."

Campaign supporters hailed from 44 states and 17 countries, and their contributions ranged from one dollar to ten thousand.  Every donation made a major difference, and we are profoundly grateful to Jim Pollin and to everyone who contributed.  The ship would not be afloat today without this extraordinary collective effort.

Meanwhile, as we reported last week, negotiations continue to move forward in support of the ship's redevelopment.  Unfortunately, we are not yet in a position to release further details, but we remain optimistic that the remaining challenges associated with the ship's restoration and reuse can be successfully resolved.

Today we celebrate the extraordinary results of our Pollin challenge grant campaign, but the ship has not yet reached safe harbor, and our continued fundraising efforts are absolutely crucial.  Donations of any amount can be made HERE.

We remain deeply grateful for your support, and we will keep you informed as our plans for the ship continue to progress.  Again, thank you so much!

From Our Chapters

The Southeastern Chapter of the SS United States Conservancy will be having its first meeting on Friday, October 24th, at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Asheville, NC. Join Chapter Chair Jordan Morris, along with former passenger Michael Jaramillo, at 6pm as they officially kick off the new chapter during this "meet and eat" event.

The Florida Chapter of the Conservancy held its latest meeting on Saturday, August 23, in Greenacres, FL. The Chapter has been discussing the challenges of meeting locations, as well as meeting times and frequency. After reviewing the results of the survey issued to Florida Chapter members, it was decided to hold meetings quarterly, and to alternate meeting locations between the northern and southern part of the state. It is expected that this will engage more participation by holding meetings at locations convenient for all who'd like to attend.

In addition, survey results suggested that meetings during the day would be preferable, so the next meeting of the Florida Chapter will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, November 8th in the Southern part of the state. More details can be found HERE in the Chapter's August meeting minutes, and will be sent to Chapter members later in October.

The winning team: Dr. Sydney Tyson, Doretta Digioia, Jim Quade, and Bill Magee at Honeybrook Golf Club

On September 19th, members of the Conservancy descended upon Honeybrook Golf Club for a Benefit Golf Tournament, Art Exhibit and Silent Auction, organized by members from several chapters and held in memory of Capt. William Francis Kolbe. In addition to teams of golfers, a number of spectators also attended to show their support and to view the inspirational artwork of Maria Mijares and Paul Stipkovich on display throughout the day.

After the tournament, the group enjoyed a delicious specially-prepared lunch made with locally-sourced food while browsing the numerous auction items that had been donated by various individuals and businesses. The day's events -- including hole sponsorships, golf fees, and auction proceeds -- raised over $7,000, all of which was matched by Jim Pollin's matching grant.

In Memoriam: Art Snow

The Conservancy wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family of former crew member Art Snow

Drew Bello shared that his uncle was part of the original crew and ran the forward fire room on the ship's Maiden Voyage. He was 1st Assistant by 1955 and left the ship in 1960 to work in the office and supervised the building of the Challenger 1's. Art was eventually put in charge of vessel development for US Lines, where Drew would often visit him. Drew also mentioned that his uncle knew William Francis Gibbs quite well. Art shared many things about the SS United States with Drew, including that: "if it wasn't for the US we wouldn't have the supercarriers we have today. She truly was a Naval experiment."

Fair winds and following seas, Art Snow.
