Please join us on in Philadelphia on March 6th as we celebrate America's Flagship.  Various events have been planned, including a special evening reception at the Independence Seaport Museum as well as a presentation by renowned author-illustrator David Macaulay at which he'll offer a "sneak peek" of his incredible book-in-progress featuring the SS United States

This is a crucial year for "America's Flagship," and we are so grateful for your continued support.

The SS United States Conservancy is proud to announce the upcoming exhibit, SS United States: Charting a Course for America's Flagship, opening at the Independence Seaport Museum.

 

This exciting exhibit supports the Conservancy's larger mission of raising awareness and building support to Save Our ShipThis exhibit,  SS United States: Charting a Course for America's Flagship, will feature ephemera, photographs, architectural drawings, unique items, and furnishings from the ship.  Visitors will view a 3D presentation of the ship's potential restoration and will have a special opportunity to share their own creative ideas about her future possibilities.

Olympian Herb Douglas reads about America's Flagship in USA Today.
Support for the SS United States is growing by leaps and bounds, and now more than ever, the Conservancy is calling on all Americans to rally for our country's namesake flagship.  

 

Now that the world's attention is focused on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, we are proud to announce that legendary Olympian Herb Douglas has answered that call and has pledged his support for saving the SS United States. Read about Douglas's inspiring athleticism and passion for social equality and athletic excellence HERE.

In conjunction with the grand opening of the Conservancy's exhibit at the Independence Seaport Museum, the Conservancy is partnering with the Free Library of Philadelphia on a very special event.

 

On Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 10:30 am, award-winning author-illustrator David Macaulay will give a special lecture and offer a "sneak peek" of his current work-in-progress: a new book focused on the SS United States. 
 
See the "Big U" as never before as Macaulay takes you on a journey that explores the ship's construction and breaks down the enormous, fascinating structure into its component parts. You're guaranteed to have your imagination stirred!

February 17, 1950: Mockup of an SS United States stateroom is tested for its fireproof capability and passes with flying colors.  

 
February 17, 1977:  Commodore John Anderson, the longest-serving master of the SS United States, dies at age 77. 
 
February 20, 1965:  The SS United States logs her two-millionth nautical mile. 

 

February 21, 1910:  New York's Chelsea Piers, built to accommodate new liners Lusitania, Mauretania, Olympic and Titanic, opens. New piers were built in 1935 for the larger-still Normandie, Queen Mary, and later United States.

 

February 23, 1886:  Charles Martin Hall discovers the electrolytic process of cheaply producing aluminum. The construction of the SS United States was the largest use of aluminum in a single project to date in 1952. 

 

February 28, 2004:  Commodore Leroy J. Alexanderson, the final master of the SS United States, dies at age 93.
