Internationally renowned author and artist David Macaulay (The Way Things Work, Castle, Cathedral) has selected the SS United States as the focus of his next book!  He has also joined the Conservancy's Advisory Council and has pledged support for our SOS Campaign to save and repurpose the SS United States.  Macaulay, who emigrated from England on board the ship at the age of ten, will be advising the Conservancy on the development of the  SS United States Center for Design and Discovery.  He has  kindly consented to share his perspectives on the ship's meaning and importance as his project on the Superliner SS United States advances.  His book will be published in 2014 by David Macaulay Studio, an imprint of Roaring Brook.

Be sure to follow Macaulay's progress on our website. He will be sharing some of his working drawings, illustrations and reflections on the SS United States, starting with the fantastic cutaway seen above.

David's support is greatly appreciated by all of us at the Conservancy. But the future of the SS United States herself remains uncertain. Our SOS Campaign has thus far raised almost $125,000, but more funding is needed to keep her future secure until our negotiations for her ultimate redevelopment can be finalized. You can help us preserve this wonderful historic monument and create the SS United States Center for Design & Discovery - please consider donating today

the ship's 61st anniversary, from June 17-19

On the 61st anniversary of the SS United States breaking the eastbound speed record, CBS Sunday Morning re-aired their story on the SS United States and the Conservancy. If you missed it, you can watch the broadcast on our YouTube channel.

In addition, the SS United States has been featured in an excellent article on the Travels with Anthony blog, outlining the importance of saving this incredible maritime achievement.

The United States was also featured in the American Society of Marine Artists Summer 2013 News & Journal in a great article penned by friend of the Conservancy, Robert Semler.  Robert's extraordinary prints of the ship can be purchased through his website HERE.

njMaywood July 4 Parade Recap

Our New York & Northern New Jersey chapter had a great time at the 4th of July Parade in Maywood, New Jersey this year.  Some 5,000 spectators lined the parade route.  The chapter marched with colorful Conservancy signs and banners and handed out materials about America's Flagship. The Conservancy would like to extend a huge thanks to Chuck Parodi for spearheading this fantastic event.  Check out more images below!
