As the Conservancy's urgent SOS Campaign enters its third month, we continue to build public support for America's Flagship. We  also continue to lay the groundwork for an extraordinary and unique preservation and redevelopment project that will honor and celebrate our history, create jobs,  and advance urban waterfront development.    (Alas,  nondisclosure agreements restrict our ability to share evolving project details at this stage.)  In short, we must meet our short-term SOS campaign goal - and we're almost a quarter of the way there - so that we can cover the ship's carrying costs as we continue to advance our plans.  The coming weeks will be absolutely crucial.  Please help us by donating and spreading the word!

In support of the Conservancy's SOS Campaign, our Philly Chapter is holding a major rally on Tuesday, June 18, in Philadelphia's LOVE Park (the NW corner of JFK Blvd & 15th St. - across from City Hall). The event runs from 4-6 pm and will feature music, speeches, and some great public outreach in this critical time for our nation's flagship. There will also be a 'Save the United States' placard competition for kids and raffles with great prizes from Legacy Tours of Distinction, Champps, Lowe's, Longhorn Steakhouse, Famous Dave's, VisionWorks, Wendy's, and the Independence Seaport Museum.  The grand prize will be an exclusive tour of the SS United States for two. The event is free and open to the public.  We hope to see you there!

In addition, we'll be holding a special screening of the film, SS United States: Made in America at the Independence Seaport Museum following the rally at 7 pm.  Two of Philadelphia's most dramatic skyscrapers - the PECO Building and Cira Centre  will be lit in support of the SS United States on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

We are profoundly grateful for all of our supporters: a list of our event sponsors is included below.   We also thank New York Chapter Chair Paul Stipkovich for his fantastic rally artwork!

If the SS United States Conservancy succeeds in its urgent SOS Campaign, the SS United States will be repurposed as an incredible mixed use development and museum complex.  The SS United States Center for Design and Discovery will excite and educate visitors as it tells a powerful story of innovation and inspiration.   Please help us Save Our Ship!

The plight of the SS United States and the Conservancy's SOS Campaign have already received some major buzz in anticipation of our upcoming rally as well as the lighting of the PECO and Cira Centre Buildings in Philadelphia. The story has so far been published by Philly.com, ABC 6 local news, PhillyBurbs.com, NBC 10 local news, and ABC 27 (Harrisburg, PA) local news.

In addition, FOX 29 local news interviewed Conservancy board member Marc Byers about the importance of the ship, as well as the Conservancy's important events this week. You can view the story online. Be sure to share, tweet, and comment to spread the word!

SSUS at sea

Join the Conservancy's New York & Northern New Jersey chapter at the Maywood 4th of July Parade! Representatives from the Chapter will be marching to raise awareness about the SS United States and have an exciting and powerful display planned honoring America's Flagship.  Note that this patriotic march can only take place with volunteer support.  We urgently need additional volunteers! If you would like to participate and are in the area, please email Chapter member Chuck Parodi ASAP at [email protected].

Maywood is just outside New York City and is easily accessible by bus or car from the city. If there is interest, we will also be providing a carpool from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 6:30 am for those coming from New York.  Thank you in advance for your support!

SS Nomadic

The restored 1911 passenger tender SS Nomadic, the last White Star Line ship, reopened to the public in Belfast at the beginning of this month. The Nomadic had a long and storied career, beginning with ferrying passengers to the Olympic and Titanic at the port of Cherbourg, where the big liners were too large to fit at the docks. She served until 1968, and was later converted to a floating restaurant in Paris. The ship was almost completely gutted, and by 2005 she appeared to be destined for the scrapyard. However, the people of Belfast rallied together and brought her back to her birthplace, now converted to a tourist attraction in the same shipyard that built her. While much smaller than the SS United States, she overcame similar odds and shows what can be when our historic ships are restored and cared for.

Congratulations to the SS Nomadic crew! You can view a video of the restoration here.
