On Monday we announced that the SS United States' faded red, white and blue funnels may soon disappear forever unless $500,000 in emergency funding can be raised this spring. While the Conservancy continues to make steady progress, the 1000-foot-long ship's maintenance costs are formidable and a permanent location for the ship's conversion into a mixed-use destination and museum complex has not yet been secured.
We are proud to provide our first SOS Campaign update: During the Campaign's first five days, the Conservancy raised over $25,000 from over 400 supporters from across the nation and around the world. While the situation remains critical, this initial outpouring of support demonstrates that the SS United States can become the beautiful, educational, and job-creating engine we have long envisioned.
Of course, we can't do it without your help. Please become a member of the Conservancy, contribute to our interactive crowdfunding campaign, and learn about the many ways you can volunteer. We also ask that supporters in New York and Pennsylvania reach out to your public officials - you can download our customizable letter here.

SS United States Redevelopment Project Managing Director Dan McSweeney discusses the SS United States with Fox News' Steve Doocy on "Fox and Friends", March 27, 2013
|
After this week's announcement that the United States faces grave danger unless the Conservancy secures bridge funding for the ship's continued upkeep, the world's news organizations once again began to buzz with stories about the fabled ship. The Associated Press featured the ship's plight on "The Big Story" page, in addition to offering a summary of the liner's career and the Conservancy's preservation and museum plans. "It's an all hands on deck moment," stated the Conservancy's Executive Director Susan Gibbs. "Now is the time, there's a window. Within months it will close unless everyone assists in the effort."
The Associated Press story was picked up by news outlets around the globe, including ABC News, NBC, The Houston Chronicle, and the UK's Daily Mail.
On Wednesday, Fox News' national morning show Fox and Friends featured an interview with Dan McSweeney, Managing Director of the Conservancy's SS United States Redevelopment Project. McSweeney discussed the Conservancy's innovative crowdfunding platform SavetheUnitedStates.org, as well as the ship's tremendous redevelopment and jobs-creating potential. "This is America's National Flagship. It bears the name of our country," said McSweeney. "How can we let this ship be lost?"
You can watch the Fox broadcast here. If you think your local press would be willing to do a story on our National Flagship, please reach out to them on our behalf! If you have a personal connection to the ship, please share your story with your media!
