Conservancy Welcomes the Newest "Ship Owners" on SaveTheUnitedStates.org
|
The number of "ship owners" on our SaveTheUnitedStates.org campaign site is growing daily, with so many of you sharing your wonderful stories of your own personal connections to the ship. Click on our ship owners' images to the left to visit their profiles on SaveTheUnitedStates.org:
"Dedicated to our beloved parents, Delia & Miguel Cruz, is this piece of the SS United States port side five blade propeller, symbolic of their five daughters. We shared our parents' pride in our dad having worked on this precious ship from 1953 until 1969 when both retired. The greatest pride and joy we now share is the 68 loving years our mother and father were happily married." - Delia Cruz
"My connection with her is different: like many boys in the 1950s, I built models, and my most complex and cherished one was the Revell model of the S.S. United States. I even had the model mounted on a custom display platform. I know two people who sailed on her in 1952. Today, the ship still projects the mythic grace and power that I see whenever I cross the Walt Whitman Bridge. I still take out-of-town visitors to see her. We must not let this legacy disappear beneath the waves of apathy." - Phil Arkow
"Sailed on her in August 1966 from Southampton to NYC. Most of my time was in 1st class that was open to we from the underclasses if you knew how to get there! And my friends in 1st class all wanted to be below decks where they found it more fun!" - Peter N. Sheridan
