SS United States and the Mayflower

Happy Thanksgiving from the SS United States Conservancy!

Thank you for your support as we work to save and restore "America's Flagship" and develop our new SS United States' Center of Design and Discovery. We will share more important updates in the weeks to come, but on this special day, we simply want to say thank you.  We know how many compelling causes compete for your time and attention. However, in the words of the Conservancy's former Honorary Chair Walter Cronkite, to lose the "Big U" would commit a "crime against history."  Thank you for all of your help during this truly momentous year!

Reuters joined many other media outlets in covering the next phase of the Conservancy's Save the United States Campaign.  New features and functionality have been added to our SaveTheUnitedStates.org campaign site, which we first launched this summer. There you'll find an improved user interface, enhanced content and more ways to help save the SS United States. Click here to read the full coverage. Your support is needed at this very crucial time as we continue our quest to save this extraordinary piece of history. Donate today.

USA Today posted a comprehensive and compelling slideshow of the SS United States to its Travel page, with many beautiful present-day photographs by Peter Knego of MaritimeMatters.com. Also included are some wonderful shots of the SS United States in her heyday, and accounts of her brilliant service career. Click here to see the coverage.

In addition, the November issue of Newsmax Magazine published a spectacular new article on the SS United States and her place in history and also profiled our executive director Susan Gibbs. Said Gibbs about saving the SS United States, "It was a calling; that this ship needed not just me, and this is an important point. The United States is a champion. I felt called to serve."  You can read a full PDF of the article here

JMGHistorian John Maxtone-Graham Visits the SS United States

Historian John Maxtone-Graham (left) and Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs (right)
World renowned maritime historian John Maxtone-Graham attended the Conservancy's Philadelphia Chapter meeting this month and paid a visit to the grand lady herself (left, pictured on the stern with Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs.) Maxtone-Graham is the author of several books on ocean liners, including The Only Way to Cross - considered one of the best accounts of shipboard life during the golden age of transatlantic travel. He is currently working on a new book,  tentatively titled, SS United States: Red White and Blue Riband.  He strongly endorsed the Conservancy's efforts, saying, "I hope this ship will be restored as expeditiously and as perfectly as Susan [Gibbs] and the Conservancy are now planning."

Video highlights of Maxtone-Graham's recent visit to the SS United States will be shared in our next issue.  This production is being prepared by the extraordinarily talented Bill Magee of MageeMedia

fdu SS United States Photo Exhibition at Fairleigh Dickinson University

Photo Exhibit at Fairleigh Dickinson University Visual Journalist Art Petrosemolo - who recently had a full-page story and photos of the SS United States published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - has mounted an incredible exhibit dedicated to the  SS United States.  The display can be viewed at the Giovatto Library at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan Campus (River Road, Teaneck, NJ).  The exhibit of jumbo black and white and color prints includes many of Art's interior and exterior shots and illustrate a number of stories on "America's Flagship" and her current plight. The exhibit is on the library's second floor circulation desk area and is open to the public without charge. The library hours vary during the school year but the facility is open most weekdays through 10 p.m (to call ahead, contact the library at 201-692-2000).
