October also includes National Fire Prevention Week--when the weather cools, fire risks increase as homeowners rekindle fireplaces and candles. Can Insurance Protect You From Halloween Havoc?
Keep Calm and Spook On
The Answer Is YES! Halloween can be scary but having the right insurance coverage can take some of the fright out of the night. Your Homeowners' and Renters' insurance policies provide financial protection for a host of disasters whether they occur on Halloween, or any other day.
Standard homeowners' and renters' policies provide coverage for the following:
  • Vandalism: In the event that your home or your personal possessions are damaged by tricksters, your homeowners' or renters' insurance provides coverage for vandalism and malicious mischief. You are on your own, however, when it comes to removing the toilet paper from your front yard...
  • Fire: If a jack-o-lantern or other decoration, goes up in flames and damages your property, your homeowners' or renters' policy covers fire-related losses. And, should the blaze make your home uninhabitable, additional living expenses (ALE) coverage will pay for alternate accommodations, such as a hotel, while your home is being repaired.
  • Injuries: The liability portion of a homeowners or renters policy comes into play if a Halloween party guest, or a trick-or-treater is injured while at your house or apartment. These policies also include no-fault medical coverage so the injured person can file their claim directly with your insurer. And if Spot gets a little skittish from all the commotion and accidentally nips a trick-or-treater your liability coverage includes damages or injuries caused by pets.
  • Theft: As with other covered losses, your protection against theft of your automobile or a burglary at home, is based on your policy's specifics including deductibles, limits, replacement cost options, etc.

National Fire Prevention Week
National Fire Prevention Week
National Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. This year FPW will be observed from October 9 - October 15, to recognize this important week of awareness we've sourced the following...
15 Fire Prevention & Safety Tips Too Important To Ignore
Chimney Sweep
  1. CLEAN THE CHIMNEY, the leading factor contributing to heating system fires is failure to clean, this usually involves creosote build-up. Have your chimneys, fireplaces, wood stoves and central furnace serviced annually. If you have a fireplace, use a screen to block airborne embers and have the chimney cleaned once a year to prevent creosote buildup that can quickly ignite a fire.
  2. Place space heaters at least 3 feet away from other objects. Always turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
  3. Place atCheck Smoke Detector Batteries least one SMOKE DETECTOR on every floor, and in or near every bedroom and
  4. CHECK THE BATTERIES! When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead. Half of home fire deaths result from fires between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. If someone in your home is deaf or hard of hearing, consider installing an alarm that combines flashing lights, vibration and sound.
  5. Consider installing a sprinkler system, it can increase property value and lower your insurance rates
  6. HAVE A PLAN! Create multiple escape plans and practice them with your family. Your plans should include escape routes from different areas of the house, tools for exiting the building (escape ladders, items to open, break out windows) Prepare Your Fireplace For Winterand a designated meeting place. It's very important to practice fire safety with kids; be sure to familiarize your them with the sounds of the alarm(s).
  7. Keep roll-out ladders near windows above the first floor for a safe escape in case of fire.
