Back To School Advice For College Students & Parents
|
College students are on the move, heading to college dorms and apartments on and off campus. For freshmen especially, it is a time of anticipation and new beginnings. However, in addition to excitement, big life changes such as these can trigger anxiety for both children and parents. Knowing that your student has solid insurance protection can alleviate many of your worries.
Theft is the most common crime on U.S. college campuses according to the Insurance Information Institute. In 2014, the Department of Education reported more than 18,000 on-campus burglaries and thefts. If your student moves into a dorm room, your homeowners' policy will likely cover their belongings in case of a loss, but will it be enough? The value of your child's possessions, especially pricey electronics, add up quickly and many homeowners' policies limit the amount of coverage for off-premise belongings to 10% of the total coverage for personal possessions. If you have not done so already, it makes sense to take a home inventory and do your math here. Adding a floater to your homeowners' policy is often a smart decision.
If your co-ed leases an off-campus apartment, renters's insurance is necessary to protect their belongings. These polices are relatively inexpensive and cover computers, electronics, jewelry, clothing, furniture and other valuables from losses due to theft, fire smoke... read more.

Make A Storm Evacuation Plan, Before You Need It!
|
In the event of a sudden emergency such as a hurricane, you may have just minutes to gather your family and important papers, and get out of your house, possibly for good. Are you prepared? Where would you go? What would you take with you? With preparation and practice, you stand the best chance of getting out with what you and your family need, and ending up in the right place.
Arrange Your Evacuation Ahead of Time
- Identify where you can go in the event of an evacuation. Try to have more than one option: the home of a friend or family member in another town, a hotel or a shelter. Keep the phone numbers and addresses of these locations handy.
- Map out your primary route and a backup route in case roads are blocked or impassable. Make sure that you have a map of the area available.
- In case your family members are separated before or during the evacuation, identify a specific... read more.

And Make A Plan For Your Pets! After many disasters, thousands of pets are tragically left to fend for themselves and many are lost, injured or worse. Since most public and all Red Cross shelters exclude pets, it is essential that you plan ahead!
- Find a safe place, contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to check policies on accepting pets.
- Make a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians outside your area that might be able to shelter pets in an emergency.

What's Sprouting Around Your House?

September is Mold Awareness Month designated by the EPA as the time to discover what's growing in the unseen corners of your basement and/or the damp corners of your guest bath. You may find mold, which left untreated can become very toxic and endanger your family's health, causing possible damage to lungs, sinuses and overall well-being. We've found some helpful information at Inspect-A-Pedia on where to look and how to identify mold in your home. Below is the EPA's "Top Ten" list and you will find more resources on the EPA website as well. Ten Things To Know About Mold- Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposure include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.
- There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
- If mold is a problem in your home, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.

Sky Watch: September 2016
|
Tonight (9/1) the New
Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. On 9/3 the blue giant, Neptune will be at its closest approach to Earth fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. The "harvest full moon" occurs on on 9/16 this year. The Autumnal Equinox is on 9/22, the sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world- it marks the first day of Fall for us in the Northern Hemisphere. Finally on 9/28, Mercury reaches its' greatest western elongation providing the best time for viewing at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.
