Time & Tide Wait For No One
Evaluate Your Flood Coverage In JULY
|
The 2016 Hurricane Season is now upon us and the Weather Company forecast indicates that this season may be the most active since 2012, the year of Hurricane Sandy. Dating back to the 18th Century, when records were first kept, Rhode Island has seen the vast majority of tropical storm impact between mid-August through late-October.
Assuming the replacement cost value of property is correct, a homeowners policy will cover any wind damage caused by a hurricane. However, it will not cover damage due to flooding and homeowners need to be aware of whether they have a hurricane deductible.
Even if a hurricane does not make landfall, collateral damage is often produced by storm surge and subsequent flooding-- an effect that we routinely experience in our Island communities. Because once written, there is a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance policies become active, NOW is the time to review and secure your coverage.
At D.F. Dwyer Insurance, we are committed to providing you with flood insurance as inexpensively, quickly, and painlessly as possible. We now offer EZ Flood a hassle-free alternative to the National Flood Insurance Program. This program enables us to customize coverage to meet YOUR specific needs and offers less expensive alternatives. EZ Flood advantages include:
- No elevation certificates required
- No surcharge for secondary residences or rentals
- Competitive premiums
- Higher coverage limits
Don't let flood insurance complicate your life-- call us at 401-846-9629 or email me at DFD@DFDwyer.com to learn more about the EZ Flood advantage.
At D. F. Dwyer Insurance, we'll always do our best for you!

Protect Yourself From Insects-- Naturally
12 Tips, 21 Non-Toxic Repellents & 4 Home Remedies
|
Summer's here and so are the bugs. Rates of insect-borne disease are on the rise and the risks are much higher than the annoyance of ants invading your picnic basket. West Nile, Lyme and Zika are three very serious infections that can all be contracted from a single insect bite. Preventive steps are literal lifesavers, but harsh chemicals including DEET introduce long-term adverse effects on our environment and us. Here we offer some natural ways to protect yourself this summer.
-
Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. - To stop ticks, tuck long pants into your socks and avoid tall grass and underbrush.
- Keep your lawn cut short.
- Stay indoors at dusk and dawn-- peak mosquito times.
- Keep screens in good repair and use netting over beds.
- Using a fan discourages mosquitoes.
- Plant mosquito-repelling plants including scented geraniums, lemon thyme, marigold, tansy, sweet basil and/or sassafras near your home.
- Eliminate standing water and refresh birdbaths regularly.
- Encourage natural predators--bats, dragonflies, praying mantis, spiders, and birds.
- Use yellow light bulbs in outdoor fixtures, they are not as attractive to bugs white ones.
- Use unscented products.
- Choose non-toxic repellents.
21 Non-Toxic Repellents

- Garlic: neither vampires nor mosquitoes like it- just sprinkle around your home and see for yourself!
4 Home Remedies

The new Moon on 7/4 will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible this night providing an extra dark backdrop for holiday fireworks. Also on 7/4, NASA's Juno spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter after a five year journey. Launched on August 5, 2011, Juno will be inserted into a polar orbit around the giant planet where it will study Jupiter's atmosphere and magnetic field. The "Thunder (full) Moon" will occur on 7/19. From 7/28-7/29, you may see the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower, which can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
