What is a BLUE MOON?
Blue MoonThere are normally only three full moons in each season of the year. But since full moons occur every 29.53 days, occasionally a season will contain 4 full moons. The "extra" full moon occurs on average once every 2.7 years, giving rise to the term "once in a blue moon."

Sky Watch: May 2016
On 5/6 the New Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun, because there will be no moonlight, we may have a clear view of the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower from 5/6-5/7. This shower is capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak with meteors radiating from the constellation Aquarius. On 5/9, Mercury moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, viewers with telescopes and approved solar filters will be able to observe the dark disk of the planet moving across the face of the Sun. This is a rare occurrence that takes place only once every few years. May 14th is International Astronomy Day, an annual event intended to "Bring Astronomy to the People," check the Astronomical League for information. On 5/21 there will be a Full Blue Moon.* On 5/22, Mars will be at its closest approach to Earth and fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph the red planet. *see sidebar, What is a Blue Moon?
