Valentine's Gifts May Require Special Coverage
|
The word 'insurance' is not likely to be the first word on your sweetheart's lips this Valentine's Day. But according to the Insurance Information Institute, the first thing that you should do, after saying yes, should be to call your insurance professional! While it might not sound romantic, and there is no way to insure the sentimental value of a precious gift, having the right coverage can at least soothe the financial sting in case of a loss.
Jewelry losses are among the most frequent of all home insurance content-related insurance claims. Fortunately, there are four relatively simple steps you can take to ensure adequate protection for your new jewelry:-
Contact Us
We can let you know how much coverage you already have and whether you will need additional insurance. Most standard homeowners and renters insurance policies include coverage for personal items such as jewelry; however, the dollar amount for the theft of high-value personal possessions if often limited. -
Obtain A Copy of the Store Receipt
Forward a copy of the receipt to us so that we can document the current retail value of the item. Keep a copy for your records and include it with your home inventory. If the item was purchased on sale, also get a copy of the appraised value of the item.
-
Have Heirloom Pieces Appraised
Antique jewelry will need to be appraised for its dollar value. Ask us to recommend a reputable appraiser.
Add the Item to Your Home Inventory
An up-to-date inventory of your possessions can help you to purchase the correct amount of insurance and speed up the claims process if you have a loss, so remember to add your new jewelry to your inventory. This free web-based app, makes it easy! Know Your Stuff® - Home Inventory.

Life Insurance: A Lasting Legacy of Your Love
|
Life insurance is one of the most selfless gifts you can give. Whether you're providing for your family or a favorite charity, it is a simple way to show your love.
Becoming a couple or starting a family means sharing responsibility with and for others. Both partners may work; building a lifestyle that depends on two incomes. There will be loans and other debts to pay off. Life insurance is a traditional way of ensuring that your family is taken care of in the event of a tragedy.
Life insurance provides a spouse, children or other beneficiary with resources in the event of the premature death including:
- Replacement income for dependents
- Pay final expenses-- funeral, burial, probate and estate cots
- Create an inheritance for your heirs or a charity beneficiary
- Pay federal and state "death" taxes
There are two basic types of life insurance:
- Term insurance provides a simple death benefit for a fixed period of time. There are several different types of term insurance - renewable, convertible, level, decreasing and increasing term coverage. The premium may stay the same for many years. However, when the stated term expires, the
premium can go up.
- Cash value insurance, as the name implies, provides permanent protection as long as you pay the premium. The premium does not increase over time. The younger a person is when buying the policy, the lower the premium will be for the life of the policy. But because premiums remain level, cash value coverage tends to be more expensive than term insurance. There are different types of cash value or permanent insurance as well - whole life, universal life, variable life and variable universal life insurance.
Planning ahead to provide for your family or favorite charity creates a lasting legacy of your love.

Skywatch: February 2016
|
The planet Mercury reaches its' greatest western elongation of 25.6 degrees from the Sun on 2/7. This is the best time for viewing since it will be at its highest point above the horizon; look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. On 2/8, the New Moon will be on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and therefore not visible in the night sky. By the Full Moon on 2/22, it will be on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. Early Native American tribes called this the Full Snow Moon because the heaviest snows usually fell at this time of the year.
