Back to School Insurance Check List
Back To School- Apple
Back-to-school isn't just the time of year when you rejoice at having your house back, and a regular routine in place. It's also the time to review your insurance needs because a change in a child's grade level, a teenager getting their driver's license, or even having a college freshman in the family can all require changes in auto, health, or homeowners coverage.

student driver Auto Insurance
If your teen will be old enough to take driver's education classes at school and get a learner's permit, you need to consider adding him or her to your auto insurance policy. There are many discounts available for teen drivers who have good grades, take extra defensive driving classes, and drive safer cars. If you have an older teen heading off to college, consider saving money by having them leave the car at home (there is special reduced coverage for students), or transitioning them to their own policy... read more

Health Insurance
All kids should have physicals before they begin school. Health insurance may need to be reevaluated if you have a child with a chronic health issue, like asthma or diabetes, or a child involved in sports. In some cases, schools require proof of coverage for student athletes. College students may have the option of subscribing to college-provided health insurance (for a fee) and campus-based health care.... read more

Music Lesson, boy with violin Homeowners Insurance
If your child is studying music or recently acquired a new computer, check to make sure the coverage for contents of your home includes these items - you may have to expand the coverage. Similarly, if you have a son or daughter going off to boarding school or college, you may need to add enough homeowners insurance coverage to account for their belongings at school... read more

Back To School On A Budget
College Students Saving Money At D.F. Dwyer Insurance, we're parents too, so we understand the financial challenges faced by families when children head off to college. In addition to tuition, room, board, books and other living expenses according to the Project on Student Debt, the average college student graduates with $24,000 in debt. But a little planning can make a big difference. Share these tips with the college students you know to get the semester off to a good start:

10 Money-Saving Tips for College Students
  1. Do the math. Use your money for rent, bills and groceries first. Then look ahead to upcoming expenses to see what you need to save for. This will give you a reality check on how much you have for new clothes and going out.
  2. Pay on time. Make a habit of paying your bills on time, every time, to avoid late fees. If your bank offers online bill pay, sign up to save time and stamps.
  3. Check your balance. Keep up with your spending by checking your account balance regularly.
  4. Protect your identity. College students are easy prey for identity thieves. If you use a public computer or network log out of your account completely and clear the cache on the web browser.
  5. Wait to buy your textbooks. Hold off until you have a syllabus in hand, then shop online for "open textbooks" or print as you go using a service like iChapter.
  6. Use your student discount. Before you buy anything, find out if there's a student discount for it. You can save money on everything from movie tickets to a new computer.
  7. Get the right meal plan. Start with a smaller plan to figure out how many meals you really eat at the commons.
  8. Participate. Colleges offer regular social events and entertainment, which often come with free food. Take them up on their hospitality.
  9. Buy your own T-shirt. Signing up for a credit card just to get a T-shirt is not a good idea. If you need a credit card, research the interest rates and rewards before you commit.
  10. Leave the car. Most campuses are pedestrian friendly, and the cost of gas is high. Ask your insurance agent if this could save you money on your car insurance, too.
