Before Lightning Strikes...

Although the number of reported lightning strikes decreased in 2014, the amount in insurance claims did not. Damage caused by lightning, such as fire, is covered by standard homeowners and business insurance policies. Some home and business policies provide coverage for power surges that are the direct result of a lightning strike. The optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy also provides coverage for lightning damage. However it takes just one random strike to ruin your day or even end your life!
Here are a few simple Lighting Safety Tips to keep in mind...
Lightning-related fires are more common in summer months and in the late afternoon and evening, but no matter what the season, if you are outside and hear thunder, seek indoor shelter right away. Most lightning victims are just steps away from safe shelter.
- Seek lower elevation areas.
- Never use a tree for shelter.
- Immediately get out of and away from the water.
- Stay away from metallic objects (fences, masts, poles, etc.)
- Do not raise umbrellas or golf clubs above you.

Sky Watch: July 2015
|
 A spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible in the evening sky tonight (7/1).The two bright planets will be extremely close, appearing only 0.3 degrees apart. Look for this impressive pairing in the western sky just after sunset. There are two full moons this month, the first on 7/2, the second on 7/31. On 7/14, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Pluto after a nine and a half year journey. Launched on January 19, 2006, this will be the first spacecraft to visit Pluto giving us close-up views of the dwarf planet and its moons.
