Prevent Identity Theft
Prevent Identity Theft

With the holiday shopping season in high gear, it is more important than ever to protect yourself from identity theft! There are many ways that thieves can get your information in person, by telephone or online by stealing your wallet, rifling through trash or by compromising your credit or bank account. The sources of information are numerous; minimize your risk by following these guidelines suggested by the FBI:

  • Never throw away ATM receipts, credit card statements, credit cards or bank statements in a usable form.
  • Never give your credit card number over the telephone unless you make the phone call.
  • Reconcile your bank account monthly, and notify your bank of discrepancies immediately.
  • Keep a list of telephone numbers to call to report the loss or theft of your wallet, credit cards, etc.
  • Report unauthorized financial transactions to your bank, credit card company, and the police as soon as you detect them.
  • Review a copy of your credit report at least once each year. Notify the credit bureau in writing of any questionable entries and follow through until they are explained or removed.
  • If your identity has been assumed, ask the credit bureau to print a statement to that effect in your credit report.
  • If you know of anyone who received mail from credit card companies or banks in the names of others, report it to local or federal law enforcement authorities.

What To Do If You Are In A Car Accident?
Automobile AccidentAccording to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are nearly 10 million auto accidents each year running the gamut from fender benders to fatal accidents. Knowing what to do if you are involved in an accident can save lives, reduce injuries and make the claims process simpler.

Here are 4 key steps to take right away:
  1. Access the Damage. If possible, pull the car to the side of the road to a safe place to see if anyone is injured, and view damage to the vehicle.
  2. Call the police or highway patrol, if you are in a serious accident. Let law enforcement know if anyone is hurt and report the extent of his or her injuries. The police will notify the nearest medical unit. If the police cannot come to the scene of the accident, you can head to the nearest precinct to file an incident report. Having an official report can help if the other driver decides to sue for damages or medical injures, or there is more damage to your car than initially thought. If the police do come to the scene, get the officers' names and badge numbers and ask where you can get a copy of the report.
  3. Collect as much information as possible* Get the names and contact information of everyone involved in the crash including witnesses. Ask the driver(s) for license, registration and insurance ID. Record the make and model of all cars involved and make note of the location of the accident, time of day and weather conditions.
  4. Get the claims process started* Notify your insurance agent of the accident as soon as possible. Insurance apps allow you to report and check the status of a claim, upload photos, check your deductible, schedule an appraisal, reserve a rental car and request reimbursements for towing and glass claims. Some apps even allow you to notify the insurance adjuster of what happened by visually re-creating the events and circumstances of your accident

Skywatch: December 2014

Geminids Meteor Shower This month's celestial events include the "Full Cold Moon" on 12/6, the Winter Solstice on 12/21 and the New Moon on 12/22. The Geminids Meteor Shower will be visible on 12/13 and 12/14. It is considered to be the best shower in the heavens producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by an asteroid know as 3200 Phaethon, discovered in 1982. The best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight, look toward the constellation Gemini, but the show can appear anywhere in the sky. The waning gibbous moon will block out some of the meteors, but the Geminids are so bright and numerous that it should still be a very good show!
