Welcome Summer Fun & Safety!

At this time of year we dust-off our summer gear, get active and enjoy the great outdoors. Unfortunately, there are many hazards that can quickly ruin a day of summer fun. In the May e-newsletter, our Boating issue, we highlighted recreational watercraft preparation and safety. In this, our first of two (land-based) Summer Fun & Safety issues we'll look at some smart steps and strategies to keep you and your family safe while biking and grilling. Biking Safety: It's more than just wearing a helmet...
|
With health, financial and environmental benefits, biking around town is a good idea as well as good fun! But just as the fine weather makes riding possible and enjoyable, local automobile traffic is building for the same reason. Many tourists navigating our city streets have little idea where they are going, and are bound to make unpredictable moves. Meanwhile, frustrated local drivers seek ways to get around town with the same speed they are accustomed to in the off-season. Therefore, this the perfect time to learn some solid tips on defensive bicycle riding.
Most resources we've seen on bicycle safety provide little more information than advising the use of helmets and to "follow the law" --but this is just not enough. Sure, a helmet might help you if you do get hit, but the goal is to NOT get hit. Following the law is important, but it won't necessarily keep you safe. We've found a comprehensive article that provides solid strategies (with easy to understand illustrations) for riding with automobiles that specifically outlines "10 Ways to Not Get Hit" including:
-
|
1. The Right Cross
|
The Right Cross - The Door Prize
- The Crosswalk Slam
- The Wrong-Way Wreck
- The Red Light of Death
- The Right Hook
- The Right Hook, part 2
- The Left Cross
- The Rear End
- The Rear End, part 2
|
2. The Door Prize
|
Additional General Tips include:
- Avoid busy streets
- Light up your bike
- Take the whole lane when appropriate
- Signal your turns
- Re-think music players and mobile phones
- Ride as if you are invisible
If you are involved in a bicycle accident, you may be covered by Uninsured Motorist protection on your automobile policy. If your bicycle is damaged or stolen it may be covered by your homeowners policy. As always, we're here to help, email or call us at 401-846-9629 for a free policy review. We'll determine the best plan to protect you, your family and your bicycles too! Read Complete Article

What's better than a backyard barbeque? Not much, we reckon. Whether it's a perfectly seared steak, a freshly caught filet or just corn on the cob, there's something special about grilling with family and friends that enhances the flavor of local seasonal favorites.
Much worse than ants or rain, an uncontrolled flare-up will cramp your cookout style and may bring unexpected guests from the local fire department to your patio. An ounce of prevention is worth much more than its weight in watermelon! Below is a quick checklist to review before firing up the barby this season.
- Propane and charcoal grills should ONLY be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed well away from your home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
- Keep the grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
Your outdoor grill may be covered by your Homeowners Insurance Policy. Email or call us at 401-846-9629 for a free policy review, let's look at the best plan to protect your home, family, guests and your even your grill. Read More
