Hurricane
Prepare for Hurricane Season

With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasting an active Atlantic hurricane season, coastal residents should take steps now to prepare for extreme weather, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.). The I.I.I. suggests the following tips to prepare for a hurricane and other disasters:

  1. Review Your Insurance Coverage The time to review your insurance policy is before you have to file a claim. You should have enough insurance to rebuild your home and replace all of its contents.
    • Make sure you have enough insurance to rebuild your home.
    • Ask about replacement cost coverage for your belongings.
    • Find out how much coverage you have for Additional Living Expenses (ALE)
    • Consider Flood Insurance-- and remember it takes 30 days for flood insurance to go into effect, so it's important to buy this insurance as soon as possible.
    • Understand your deductible-- separate hurricane deductibles are incorporated into many homeowners insurance policies issued in many coastal states.
    • If you are a renter, get renters insurance
  2. Create A Home Inventory
    • The I.I.I.'s Know Your Stuff-Home Inventory software and mobile app makes creating a home inventory easy. Armed with this information you will know the proper amount of insurance to purchase.
  3. Hurricane Evacuation Route Have An Evacuation Plan
    • Know where you will go and what you will take, if the authorities tell you to evacuate. Don't forget to consider the details of taking your pets with you!
  4. Protect Your Property
    • Hurricane-proof your home by keeping wind and water out/ secure roof shingles and seal any openings, cracks or holes.

Eight Auto Insurance Myths

Auto Insurance Myths When purchasing car insurance, it's important to understand the factors that affect your car insurance premium rates and coverage. But how do you differentiate between truth and fiction? A good place to start is by dispelling some common myths about auto insurance:

  • Myth 1: Color determines the price of auto insurance.
Auto insurance premiums are based on make, model, body type, engine size, sticker price, cost to repair, overall safety record, age of the vehicle and the age, driving record and credit history of the driver.
  • Myth 2: It costs more to insure your car when you get older. Actually, the opposite is true, many drivers over 55 years old can qualify for a reduction in insurance rates.
  • Myth 3: Your credit has no effect on your insurance rate. People with good credit scores pay less for insurance when credit scores are entered into the pricing equation.
  • Tree fell on car Myth 4: Your insurance will cover you if your car is stolen, vandalized or damaged by tree limbs, hail, flood or fire. Because comprehensive and collision coverage are optional coverages, you must carry both of these to protect your vehicle from all types of damage.
  • Myth 5: You need only the minimum amount of auto liability insurance required by law. In today's litigious society, chances are likely that the minimum liability coverage will leave you exposed to out-of-pocket expense for losses incurred after an accident.
  • Myth 6: If other people drive your car, their auto insurance will cover them in the event of an accident. In most states, the auto insurance policy covering the vehicle is considered the primary insurance, which means that the owner's insurance company must pay for damages caused by an accident.
  • Myth 7: Soldiers pay more for insurance than civilians. If you are in the military you actually qualify for a discount on auto insurance.
  • Auto Insurance Myth 8: Personal auto insurance covers both personal and business use of your car. If you are self-employed and use your vehicle for business purposes, you may not be protected. While auto insurance geared for businesses can be more costly than a personal policy, one of the best ways to keep your auto insurance rates down is by having a good driving record.

Call us at 401-846-9629 to discuss your automobile insurnace policy; we're always here to help!
