Distracted Driving . . .
Put Your Phone Down Just Don't Do It!

With the increase of seasonal visitors and traffic, driving on Aquidneck Island can be frustrating at this time of year. Combining our busy schedules with extra traffic can tempt us all to multi-task behind the wheel. But don't do it! Here's why you should hang up and just drive...

Driver distractions or inattentive driving play a part in one out of every four motor vehicle crashes. That is more than 1.5 million collisions a year and 4,300 crashes daily, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to Distraction.gov there are three main types of distraction

  1. Manual: taking your hands off of the wheel
  2. Visual: taking your eyes off of the road
  3. Cognitive: taking your mind off driving

While the tips below are just common sense, the challenge comes in actually applying them in our busy lifestyles.

  • Pull Off the Road
  • Use Speed Dialing
  • Never Dial While Driving
  • Take A Message, Let Your Voice Mail Pick-up
  • Know When to Stop Talking, Keep Conversations Brief
  • Don't Eat or Drink While Driving
  • Groom Yourself At Home

Remember, avoidable distractions cause unnecessary accidents.

Small Business Insurance Basics

Small Business Insurance Basics What You Need To Know

The most common policy for small businesses is a Businessowners Policy (BOP) that combines coverage for all major property and liability insurance risks into one package policy suitable for most small businesses. To cover specific risks associated with a business, a variety of additional coverages may be added to the basic BOP.

Only small- to medium-sized businesses that meet certain criteria are eligible for a BOP. Factors insurers consider include the size of the premises, the required limits of liability, the type of business and the extent of offsite activity. Premiums for BOP policies are based on those factors plus business location, financial stability, building construction, security features and fire hazards.

Most small businesses need to purchase at least the following four types of insurance:

  1. Property Insurance compensates a business if property is lost or damaged as a result of various types of common perils, such as fire or theft. It may also cover office furnishings, inventory, raw materials, machinery, computers and other items vital to a business's operations.
  2. Liability Insurance pays damages for which a business is found liable as well as attorneys' fees, legal defense expenses and the medical bills of anyone injured by, or on the premises of, the business.
  3. Business Auto Insurance pays any cost to third parties resulting from bodily injury or property damage for which the business is legally liable.
  4. Workers Compensation Insurance pays for medical care and replaces a portion of lost wages for an employee who is injured in the course of employment, regardless of who was a fault for the injury.

Other Types of Business Coverages:

  • Errors & Omissions Insurance / Professional Liability
  • Employment Practices Liability Insurance
  • Directors & Officers Liability Insurance
  • Key Employee Insurance
  • Umbrella Policies
