Mac Sudduth NOV2012
From the Executive Director

Science Festival:
A Look Back & Ahead

November marks my second year at miSci. I came here because there was an amazing group of board members, staff, and volunteers and I was sure that miSci could make a difference. It's been a great two years. The recent Science Festival illustrates our reception in the Capital Region. In two and one half days we had between two and three thousand participants. We did extensive audience evaluation and the response was overwhelmingly positive. We were also heartened by the collaboration because the Science Festival brought under one roof many of the great resources in informal and formal science education in the region.

We were proud to have the following partners: Adirondack Museum, Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany Pine Bush Preserve, Audubon Society/Capital Region, Berkshire Museum, Cat's Eye, Cornell Cooperative Extension 4H, Crafts for Learning Expert & Author Kathy Science Festival 2014 Ceceri, Dudley Observatory, Empire State Aerosciences Museum (ESAM), Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, GE Engineers Edison Group, Girls Inc. Eureka Girls, KAPL, Niskayuna Chem Demo Club, Niskayuna High School Robotics Club, Nano-Link, NYISO, Quirky, San Francisco's Exploratorium, Schenectady County Community College, Schenectady County Recycling, Schenectady County Water Quality Coordinating Committee, Science Club of SCCC, Scotia-Glenville Traveling Museum, SI Group, SMARA (Schenectady Museum Amateur Radio Association), Union College Engineering Professor Dr. James Hedrick, Union Graduate College President & Brain Expert Dr. Laura Schweitzer, Time Warner Cable, Times Union, Union College Bioengineering Program, Union College STEP Program, Union College Engineering Ambassadors Network, Union College Physics Society, Wildlife Education by Bernie, Wilton Wildlife Preserve, WMHT.

Of course we also had sponsors; the presenting sponsors were the William Gundry Broughton Charitable Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Time Warner Cable who also provided science activities including a weather Science Festival 2014 station and an area to make a tornado in a bottle.  The Festival was such a great success that Time Warner has signed up as sponsor for next year.  Other sponsors included National Grid, GE, Schenectady County, Berkshire Bank, NYISO, Albany Broadcasting, the Times Union, and WMHT. We were also a proud member of the Science Festival Alliance.

Science Festival 2014 This year we had to add a tent so we could do bigger stage shows: Bubble Trouble by Jeff Boyer, It's Not Magic ... It's Science by Modesto Tamez of San Francisco's Exploratorium, and Wildlife Education were crowd pleasers.

The Dudley Observatory Skywatch Lecture on Friday night had over 100 attendees. Professor Heidi Newberg of RPI talked about being on the team that discovered Dark Energy and winning the Noble Prize.  We were so excited during the Festival when it was announced that her team had also won the $3,000,000 Breakthrough Prize and she had a share.

Science Festival 2015 will start Veteran's Day, November 11, 2015 with special programming and continue with an evening program on November 12th and the expo part of the Festival with all the booths and activities will run November 13, 14, and 15.

Putting the Science Festival both behind us and ahead of us for next year, we are now getting ready for the holidays and our Trains & Toys open November 28 to January 19. By then we will also have free WIFI for our visitors in the miSci lobby. As part of the Holidays we will also be showing planetarium shows, 'Tis the Season (a holiday favorite), Secrets of the Sky (designed for younger audiences), Night of Pegasus ending December 20 and Night of the Hunter starting December 21 (both live shows exploring the winter night sky).

Have a wonderful holiday season and come to visit us at miSci!

National Grid Installs NEW WeatherBug Station

A new WeatherBug station installed by National Grid at miSci allows visitors to explore real-time weather with a lobby console and a website link.

The WeatherBug console installed in the main lobby lets visitors scroll through multiple screens of real-time weather information for the area. The link on the home page of miSci's website allows visitors access to this information at any time from any location.

Visitors can interact with the WeatherBug console to explore real-time Doppler Radar activity, humidity, pressure, rainfall, temperature, wind, sunrise and sunset. In addition to providing valuable data about current conditions, the WeatherBug console lets visitors explore many other areas of science: weather forecasting, climate, data collection, and real-time results. EvalFest Award for Science Festival & Other Recent Grants & Awards

EvalFest
miSci joins 26 others in the Collaborative Research: EvalFest, (Evaluation Use, Value, and Learning through Festivals of Science and Technology) project. The grant will provide miSci with an estimated $27,550 in resources to supplement our Science Festival evaluation efforts. This includes use of technology and software for data collection, travel reimbursement for required meetings, and technical assistance from a principal investigator (PI) for five years. In the grant's later years, funding will be available through mini-grants to field test new and innovative evaluation methods.

This five-year initiative, beginning in 2015, received $1,812,654 in funding from the National Science Foundation. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill serves as the project's lead institution. EvalFest is a research project which will foster a national community of practice to develop, test, and share methods for evaluating Science Festivals, and create a suite of next-generation measures of interest to the informal science education and evaluation communities.
