Plant a good bug tub
good bug
At Sloat Garden Center we deeply believe gardening is good for the planet -- we urge gardeners to plant something this Earth Day.

Another way to celebrate Earth Day is to keep chemicals out of the garden when trying to get rid of harmful insects. Instead, manage pests by using one of the oldest and most successful methods of pest control on the planet; attract beneficial insects that will prey on pests. Ladybugs, lace-wings, praying mantis and beneficial nematodes will eat nuisance insects. They truly are "good" bugs!

You can attract the beneficial insects that feed on plant eating critters by creating a environment for them to live, feed and lay their eggs.

Good bug tubs are great for gardeners with small or large spaces.  Read more here:

Greetings!
Our garden centers are absolutely bursting with gorgeous spring color. We have so many flowers, shrubs, trees and ready-to-plant edibles at all our locations...and we're bringing in more each week. See some of our latest spring arrivals here.

 Also...

  • Plant a Good Bug Tub for Earth Day (April 22nd). One ladybugway to encourage visiting beneficial insects to become permanent pest patrollers is to grow flowers that produce lots of nectar and pollen. With your help, these beneficials will have food when pest populations decline. See our Good Bug Tub article below.
  • Enter your best tomato or strawberry recipe in our Spring Recipe Contest! If chosen, your recipe will appear in our April Kitchen Gardener (about tomatoes) or May Kitchen Gardener (about strawberries), and we'll send you a $25 Sloat Garden Center gift card. Send your entry, along with a picture of the finished dish, to: recipes@sloatgardens.com by Friday, April 5th, 2013. We will contact the contest winners by April 15th.

Our April Plant Pick gardenguru
 butterflies
Polygala Petite Butterflies

This neat and compact shrub has become the new garden darling. Bright purple/magenta blossoms resembling sweet peas cover the plant from mid spring to fall. Use it as an informal hedge, foundation planting or container plant. This plant will take full sun to part shade and will tolerate seacoast conditions. Provide well- drained soil and monthly feedings with EB Stone All Purpose Fertilizer April through September. Cut back hard in late winter to maintain compact shape.

Garden Guru: April gardenguru
Dear Garden Guru,

We have a dirt hill that backs up to open space. This year there is way more than usual gopher or moles, so many that I worry about the integrity of the hill. What is the best way to deal with them? I really don't want them to reach my flowers and vegetables.
-- Jo in San Rafael
