garden design
If you're thinking about how to improve your garden space, call the Sloat Garden Center Design Department. We can develop simple, success oriented, low maintenance planting plans for gardens, decks, and terraces, as well as provide indoor plant consultations. Most importantly, we can help you brainstorm ideas and solutions.

Problem solving is a large part of what we do. We will come up with a garden design that works with existing plant material and takes into account your available time to garden. Then we put together a planting plan that works for you. We develop a loose "bubble diagram" and a complete plant list with the quantities and sizes of plant material, soil requirements, and pruning, feeding and care information.

Our planting plans can be easily followed by every level of gardener; whether you prefer to do it yourself or have a professional install your plants.

To schedule an appointment, call us at 415-388-3754 or email us: design@sloatgardens.com

Greetings!

"The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings.
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings."

March Plant Pick gardenguru
Lily of the Valley Shrub (Pieris)
pieris
This spring flowering shrub has it all: a multitude of fragrant, urn-shaped blossoms, colorful new growth, and a neat, compact growth habit. Since it usually grows taller than wide, it is well suited for narrow beds and walkways. It is most often planted with its companion plants Azalea, Rhododendron,
and blueberry. A partial sun exposure is preferred but it will take full sun on the coast. Give protection from hot afternoon sun in inland areas. Provide good drainage by planting in a soil rich in compost. We recommend the EB Stone Azalea, Camellia and Gardenia Mix for both ground and container plantings.
Mulch with Greenall Microbark to keep roots cool. Pieris are not heavy feeders but appreciate a feeding with an acid fertilizer in March and May.
