Letter from the Director
In many ways, 2012-13 has been a watershed year for the Duke Global Health Institute. We have matured from an eager, ambitious start-up to a thriving, committed community of faculty, students, staff and partners.

We are now realizing many of the dreams we had six years ago, and we're starting to see the fruits of our labor emerge. At the core of the Duke Global Health Institute is collaboration. This collaboration is exemplified everyday through our work with Duke schools -- including Duke Medicine -- to recruit joint faculty; in the classroom and the field between faculty and students; and with partners around the world who conduct research that matters.
Collaboration requires strong communication, shared goals, and a mutual respect for one another. I am most proud of the Institute's ability to create linkages -- globally and locally -- in order to advance the field of global health. There's no better example of this than the approval of a one-of-a-kind, undergraduate liberal arts major and minor in global health. In partnership with the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and its faculty, Duke undergraduates now have the opportunity to channel their passion and educational pursuits toward solving important global challenges and becoming tomorrow's leaders.
As we describe in the 2013-2017 Strategic Plan, our goal over the next five years is to transform global health by preparing leaders, conducting research to seek solutions and partnering for change. We highlight some major accomplishments this year and look forward to building on those successes in the years to come.
