Issue 38 Volume 12  - Week of September 21, 2014

From Dr. Jim Weldon, Jr.

Dear FIPC Church Family,

Max Lucado is one of my favorite authors. He is a prolific writer having published dozens of books. He has a unique, down to earth, get to the point writing style and always manages to surprise his readers. I would highly recommend any of his books. Below is a devotional he wrote that I wanted to share with you:

*************************************************

Preferring the Pigs and Lunatics
by Max Lucado

"They came to Jesus and saw the man who used to have the many evil spirits, sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. And they were frightened. The people who saw this told the others what had happened to the man who had the demons living in him, and they told about the pigs. Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area." (Mark 5:15-17)

They did what? The people began to beg Jesus to leave the area.

You mean the people asked Jesus to leave? That's right. Rather than thank him, they dismissed him? You got it. What would cause people to do such a thing?

Good question. What would cause people to prefer pigs and lunatics over the presence of God?

Or better ...

What would cause an alcoholic to prefer drunken misery over sobriety?
What would cause a church to prefer slumber over revival?
What would cause a nation to prefer slavery over freedom?
What would cause people to prefer yesterday's traditions over today's living God?

The answer? Fear of change. Change is hard work. It's easier to follow the same old path than to move out into uncharted territory.

So the people dismissed Jesus. And since Jesus never goes where he isn't invited, he steps back into the boat.

Now watch what happens next.

"As Jesus was getting back into the boat, the man who was freed from the demons begged to go with him. But Jesus would not let him." (Mark 5:18)

Strange way to treat a new believer, don't you think? Why wouldn't Jesus take him along? Simple. He had greater plans for him. "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you" (v. 19).

There it is. The commissioning of the first missionary. One minute insane, the next in Christ. No training. No teaching. All he knew was that Jesus could scare the hell out of hell and apparently that was enough.

But even more surprising than the man who was sent is the fact that anyone was sent. I wouldn't have sent a missionary to some people who had just given me the boot, would you? A plague perhaps, but not a missionary. But Christ did.

And Christ does. He still sends the message to the unworthy. And he still uses the unworthy as messengers.

After all, look who's reading this book.

And look who wrote it.

************************************************

May God bless you and keep you close to Him.  God is good, all the time!  All the time, God is good!

Grace and Peace,

 Jim Weldon

Welcome Varney Baby

baby feet

Join us in giving thanks to God almighty for his precious blessing.  We want to welcome Rubiana Aurora Varney who was born on Friday, September 19 at 6:02 a.m.  She weighed 6 lbs 13 oz.  Rubiana and her Mom, Heather, are both doing fine.  Her Daddy, Chad, survived too!

Women's Retreat

We had 27 women attend the Women's Retreat at One Ocean Resort & Spa this past weekend.  For the Men's Retreat, the men go camping and take the children; for the Women's Retreat, the women go to a beach spa resort without the children!  Although, we did have four generations from one family participate this year.  The chocolate themed retreat, Cafe Chocolat, gave these 27 women the opportunity to reflect on God's extravagant grace as they indulged in a lot of rich chocolate!

Back to Church Sunday
September 28 @ 10:00 am

Worship Building Sanctuary

National Back To Church Sunday began as a movement to invite everyone in America back to church by empowering and motivating church members to invite their family and friends to come with them to a special service hosted by the local church.

The movement was spurred on by a couple of statistics:
  • If invited, 82% of the unchurched are at least somewhat likely to attend.
  • Only 2% of Christians EVER invite someone to church!
FIPC has declared September as "Back To Church Month." The official National Back To Church Sunday is September 21. Since that is the weekend of our Women's Retreat, we will celebrate "Back To Church Sunday" on September 28. FIPC's motto is "Helping People To Love God and Love Others."  We accomplish this through INVESTING and INVITING...investing in our family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers by inviting them to church.

We challenge you to invite someone to worship this Sunday for Back To Church Sunday!

This Week's Devotional

"The Bible Does The Impossible In Your Life"

by Rick Warren

PurposeDriven.com

This Week's Devotional

"He chose to give us birth through the word of truth." (James 1:18a NIV)

God wants to use his Word to give you a fresh start in life.

Without God's Word, we could never be saved. We wouldn't be headed for Heaven. We wouldn't know about Jesus' death on the cross. We wouldn't know about God's purpose for our lives.

Without the Bible, we can't know God.

God wants to give you all of that - but it starts with his Word. Through the Bible, God recreates our lives. When I feel like I'm at the end of my rope, God uses the Bible to give me a fresh start, a do-over. The Bible calls it being "born again." James 1:18 says, "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth" (NIV).

The Bible is often compared to a seed. Once the Bible takes root in your heart, it begins to sprout and grow and bear fruit. As God's Word does that, God changes your life for the better.

Jesus says this in John 6:63 about his Word: "The words I have spoken to you - they are full of the Spirit and life." God's Word isn't just words on a page. It's spirit and life. It's spiritual power. His Word can transform society and history. It can do the impossible. It can change your life!

D.L. Moody, a famous Chicago pastor from 100 years ago, said, "The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge; the Bible was given to change our lives."

How do you need your life changed? What part of your life do you feel powerless to change?

The Bible says the Word of God can change things that you cannot change on your own. Make God's Word a regular part of your life, and get ready for the impossible!
