Issue 26 Volume 12  - Week of June 29, 2014

From Dr. Jim Weldon, Jr.

Dear FIPChurch Family,

As we grow up spiritually one of the things God develops in us is our ability to be emotionally healthy in our spirituality.  It is a simple thing and yet, too often our emotional health gets neglected.  Fabs Hartford, writes about this and calls it relationally trustworthy.  In her article "Am I Relationally Trustworthy" writes this:

"Relational trust is a distinctive mark and a necessary attribute of Christian community.  It's a distinctive mark.  Christians can be relationally trustworthy because our worth is found in Christ alone.  Finding our identity in Him frees us up to receive direct feedback because we're not threatened by failure or weakness in Christ. We are free to give direct feedback because we're not slaves to the approval of man.  We can tell one another the truth because know that a person's value has nothing to do with their performance.  It's a necessary attribute.  Hebrews tells us to exhort one another as long as it's called today so that we aren't hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.  One of our primary jobs in our community is to communicate directly with one another when we see blind spots.  One of our primary means of perseverance is people around us speaking into our lives about our own blind spots." (The full articles can be found here: Am I Relationally Trustworthy)

Signs and symptoms:  Emotionally Healthy people get spiritual feedback and learn from others.  They are intentional about their spiritual and emotional growth.  Emotionally healthy people communicate their expectations directly and clearly.  They take responsibility for miscommunication.  They have the courage to speak gentle correction to their friends who is walking into sin instead of avoiding them and hoping someone else steps in.  They speak the truth but only in gentleness and love.  They do not enable gossip by listening to someone 'vent' about a situation without encouraging them to engage the involved parties directly.

Growing up in Christ and becoming emotionally healthy takes work.  It is about doing the right thing with the people you love and doing it consistently.  This is hard!  In raising our children, Jennifer and I always encouraged them to do the right thing, even if it cost you.  Our son Jacob found a very nice skate board in the woods by our neighborhood.  He wanted to keep it.  But after talking it over with him about what was the right thing to do, he decided to put up signs saying he found a skateboard.  He put up the signs and the owner claimed the board.  We told our children we would never lie for them.  If they missed school, or practice, because they got up late, we would not send in a note saying they were ill.  They never asked us to do that.  Are we perfect?  No!  We make mistakes all the time.  We are works in progress, just like everyone else.  We are making slow but steady progress trying to do the right thing instead of the easy thing.

Becoming emotionally healthy is a vital part of growing in our faith.  God is the one who brings grow as we pursue Him and submit our will to His will.  It's a life long endeavor.  But when we submit our will to His will, we get glimpses of the fact that He is good!  And He is good all the time!

Grace and Peace,

 Jim Weldon

This Week's Devotional

 "Empty Hands Receive Greater Blessings"

by Rick Warren

PurposeDriven.com

This Week's Devotional

"You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." (2 Corinthians 9:11 NIV)

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:11, "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God" (NIV).

What an amazing verse! God makes you rich in every way so you can be generous on every occasion, which will result in thanksgiving to God.

God doesn't bless you so you can be greedy; he blesses you so you can be generous. You give away, and God gives back to you so you can give more away and he can give more back to you and on and on and on. God doesn't give you things so you can pile them up. When you let go of what's in your hand, it's now empty to receive greater blessings from God.

But as I've said before, God's giving to you is based on your attitude. That's why it's so important to live with an attitude of gratitude. The Bible says, "This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God" (2 Corinthians 9:12).

When you give, you are performing a service. To serve and to give is the same thing. It's two actions of love. You can't love without serving and giving. And the best part is this: Your service leads to expressions of thanksgiving to God.

Take a moment to pray and express your gratitude to God.
