Issue 8 Volume 12  - Week of February 23, 2014

From Dr. Jim Weldon, Jr.

Dear FIPChurch Family,

This past Sunday was a first for our church in hosting our first ever Boy Scout Sunday.  It was so awesome to see so many young men helping out with the ushering and greeting duties at church.  They even set up a mock camp site on our south campus property.  I hope you were able to see what they were all about.  We received a short biography and history of Troop 309 from their Scoutmaster, and I've included it below:

"Since its inception Scouting has maintained the goal of developing young men to their fullest ability using the ideals and methods of the Boy Scouts of America.

Our Scout unit is blessed to be sponsored by Fleming Island Presbyterian Church.  Boy Scout Troop 309 was started on Fleming Island in late 2003 and has been honored to be part of Fleming Island Presbyterian Church since September 2013.

We honor our Duty to God abiding by the religious traditions, rules and policies of Fleming Island Presbyterian Church.  Scouting is a ministry and outreach of the Church.

Boy Scout Troop 309 currently is serving 26 boys, ages 11 to 18.
Since its inception, 19 young men in our Troop have achieved Eagle Scout.

Our scouting program includes 10 campouts, hikes and canoe trips during the year and a week-long summer camp in June.   This year the troop will travel to a camp just north of Chattanooga ,TN.

We participate in the Green Cove Springs Food Pantry and Boy Scout Special Needs Camporee for handicapped and children with special learning disabilities.

Thank you for your continued support."

For any questions on Scouting at our church you can ask our Scoutmaster Bob Thomas (904) 449-1707 or the Committee Chairman Bob Kamm (904) 226-8033.

Newly Elected Session Has First Meeting and Recognizes Significant Service

The new Session at FIPC met on Monday, February 24 for their first official meeting.  As is customary at every Session meeting, the Elders wished to recognize the following folks for their significant and valued acts of service:
  • Elders Rotating Off Session: These folks are being recognized for their willingness to accept God's call into this highly valued called position of lay leadership.  These men and women served faithfully and sacrificially, and served during major times of transition and discernment.
  • Tonya Stansberry: The Session is saddened at the announcement of Tonya's departure from the Interim Director of Youth Ministry position, but is delighted that she will continue her work with the Junior High ministry as a volunteer.  The Elders would like to thank her for stepping up and out in faith to help us continue to maintain and grow our youth ministry.

FIPC Hosts its First Ever Scout Sunday

The Boy Scouts from Troop 309 were recognized at service on Sunday, and joined in helping with the offering and ushering duties.

The Troop even set up a mock Boy Scout Camp for the congregation to stop by and and visit what one looks like.  Our church is abundantly blessed by their presence, and we thank them for helping us on Sunday!

This Week's Funny

How I Met Your Father

Studying our wedding photos, my six-year-old asked, "Did you marry Dad because he was good-looking?"

"Not really," I replied.

"Did you marry him for his money?"

"Definitely not," I laughed. "He didn't have any."

"So," he said, "you just felt sorry for him."

"Anger Starts in the Heart"
by  Rick Warren
PurposeDriven.com

"Whatever is in your heart determines what you say."
Matthew 12:34b (NLT)

A problem with anger isn't going to be solved by a trip to the doctor or an episode of "Dr. Phil" or a self-help book. The real secret to managing anger is God's power to change you on the inside. Romans 15:5 says, "May the patience and encouragement that come from God allow you to live in harmony with each other the way Christ Jesus wants" (NCV).

How does God help you with your bad habit of anger? He goes straight to the heart of the problem, which is a problem in the heart. Anger doesn't start in your behavior, your background, or your feelings. It starts in the heart.

The Bible says, "Whatever is in your heart determines what you say" (Matthew 12:34b NLT). Our mouths just betray what we're really like inside. Sometimes I hear people say something really mean or unkind and then they say, "Oh, I don't know what got into me. That's not like me."

Oh, yes it is! Your mouth just reveals what's in your heart. Someone's harsh tongue reveals an angry heart. When you meet somebody with a negative tongue, you know he's got a fearful heart. When someone has a boasting tongue, it reveals an insecure heart. Someone's judgmental tongue just exposes a guilty heart. Somebody with a filthy tongue has an impure heart.

On the other hand, if you find somebody who's always encouraging others, he has a happy heart. If he's always speaking in a gentle way, you know he's got a loving heart. If he's able to control his words, you know he's got a peaceful heart.

Are you satisfied with the words that naturally come out of your mouth? If not, then you need a heart transplant. You need a new heart! David says in Psalm 51:10, "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (NIV).

If your heart is crying out inside, it's because you haven't ever fully received the warmth and security of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus can replace a hurting heart with his love. He cares about your pain, and he will help you heal so that your words give life and reveal the hope you have in Christ.
