FIPC Newsletter

Issue 6 Volume 12  - Week of February 9, 2014

From Dr. Jim Weldon, Jr.

Dear FIPChurch Family,

Here We GROW again!  Welcome our new member
  • Lisa Miller joining by Profession of Faith.
This takes our total membership up to 314!  7 new members this year!  And it's barely February!!

I would like to extend a special "THANK YOU!" to our Elders who are rolling off the Session.  The Session is our Board of Elders who work with the Pastor and Staff to lead this church.  The Session consists of the Pastor and Elders.  They have served with excellence and love, and have worked long and hard with humility in their leadership.  They have been a vital part and blessing in leading this church.  They are:
  • Burl White - Treasurer, Finance, Denominational Relations and Strategic Ministry Teams
  • Carlos Brooks - Strategic, Nominating, Building and Grounds, and Count Ministry Teams
  • Dan Norton - Nominating, Building and Grounds Ministry Teams
  • Ann Roos - Adult and Prayer Ministry Teams
  • Shon Brewer - Youth Ministry Team
  • * Jeff Vanderpool -Garden and 5th Quarter Ministry Teams
  • * Arlene Bowling - Children, Congregation Care, and Count Ministry Teams
  • * Oz May - Strategic, Denominational Relations, and Worship Ministry Teams
(* indicates those who will be serving another term on the Session)

As I always say, being an Elder in the Presbyterian Church is a "demotion", because it is a call to roll up your sleeves and serve.  Those men and women, who are rotating off the Session, have all volunteered to continue to offer their leadership in the ministry and mission of this church.  I want to encourage you to say "thank you" to each of these people by sending a note, email, phone call, or just thank them in person next Sunday!

God is Good All the Time!

Your Pastor and Friend,

Jim

Children's Ministry Team Hosts Daddy Daughter Valentine's Dinner
The Children's Ministry Team sponsored an awesome event for Dads and their daughters.  The event was catered by Olive Garden, and included crafts for both the dads and the daughters to make (yes...dads were experiencing the joys of a hot glue gun), musical chairs, and a take on the Newlywed Game.

Great job to the team, and special thank you to Carissa Hogan, Children's Ministry Event Chair, for her leadership!

This Week's Funny

Valentine's Funnies!

First Kiss

At the end of their first date, a young man takes his favorite girl home. Emboldened by the night, he decides to try for that important first kiss.

With an air of confidence, he leans with his hand against the wall and, smiling, he says to her, "Darling, how 'bout a goodnight kiss?"

Horrified, she replies, "Are you mad? My parents will see us!"

"Oh come on! Who's gonna see us at this hour?"

"No, please. Can you imagine if we get caught?"

"Oh come on, there's nobody around, they're all sleeping!"

"No way. It's just too risky!"

"Oh please, please, I like you so much!!"

"No, no, and no. I like you too, but I just can't!"

      "Oh yes you can. Please?"

      "NO, no. I just can't."

      "Pleeeeease?..."

Out of the blue, the porch light goes on, and the girl's sister shows up in her pajamas, hair disheveled. In a sleepy voice the sister says: "Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. Or if need be, he'll come down himself and do it. But for crying out loud tell him to take his hand off the intercom button!"

True Love

If you love something, set it free.
If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours.
If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with.
If it just sits in your living room,
      messes up your stuff,
      eats your food,
      uses your telephone,
      takes your money,
and never behaves as if you actually set it free in the first place,
you either married it or gave birth to it!

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional
"Express Your Love with Your Time"
by  Rick Warren
PurposeDriven.com

"We must show love through actions that are sincere, not through empty words." 1 John 3:18 (GW)

We all have different amounts of energy, wealth, and talent, but we all have the exact same amount of time: 168 hours a week. You can always get more money, but you can't get more time. You only have a certain amount of allotted days, so you have to decide: What is your time worth?

The most valuable thing you can give someone is your attention, because when you give attention to somebody you're saying, "You matter to me. You are valuable. You are worth listening to. You are worth my time."

Jesus said that the essence of relationships is not what we do for each other or the things we give to each other. The essence of true, loving relationships is how much we give of ourselves to another person.

The second law of love is this: The best expression of love is time.

The Bible says in 1 John 3:18, "We must show love through actions that are sincere, not through empty words" (GW).

I can't tell you how many husbands and dads I've talked to who've said, "I don't get it, Rick. I give my family everything they need. I'm a good provider. We live a very comfortable life. What more do they want?"

I'll tell you what they want: They want you!

Only you can give them your time. Nothing can compensate for time - no amount of gifts, money, or clothes. Kids don't need things; they need parents. Another video game is not the answer. They need you!

How do you find more time for the people who love you and that you need to love?

Let me give you one suggestion: Turn off the TV and the computer. It's always amazed me that people will watch reruns of "Friends" instead of making friends or watch reality shows about somebody else's family instead of working on the reality of their own family.

Ephesians 5:2 says, "Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God" (NLT).

Love means giving up. It means I give up my agenda for your agenda. It means I give up my time for your time. It means I give up my preference for your preference. It means I give up what I'd rather do right now to do what you'd rather do right now. That is a sacrifice. That is love.
