Issue 42 Volume 11  - Week of October 27, 2013

From Rev. Jim Weldon, Jr.

Dear FIPChurch Family,

Losing my Dad has made me rather reflective over the past few weeks.  For me, it means reflecting on the big questions of life.  One of the big questions is this, "What does it mean to be part of a family?"

At Dad's viewing and service, I saw family members I have not seen in years.  I saw family members who have...how can I say, "put themselves outside the family?"  I saw family members who have been in horrific fights, arguments, and disagreements with each other.  I saw family members who had their feelings hurt, their hearts broken, their lives fallen apart.  And yet...they are still MY family, and it was good to see them!  Death is the ultimate leveler. It puts everything and everyone in perspective.  It reminds us that there is more to come; that this life is not all there is, and that this life is preparation for the next.

Sometimes being in a church family is uncomfortable.  Some of the old timers in my family say that people have lost perspective and do not know how to "be family" anymore.  They do not know what it is like to disagree without being disagreeable.  They do not know how to work things out.  They do not know how to, "not get their way."  (I love that!)  They do not know how to forgive one another and move on; hang in there with one another.   When the going gets tough, as the folks on Duck Dynasty say, "They gone!"

The good news is this...It doesn't have to be that way!

The church is a family.  It is God's family.  It transcends and extends beyond any and all barriers and boundaries.  It is inclusive of all who repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.  When people join this church, the rest of this church family opens up their heart and their homes to them.  We take vows, make commitments, to love one another, care for one another, be there with one another, hang tough with one another, forgive one another, work things out with one another.  Is there someone you need to do this with?  We are a family-God's family.

See you Sunday!   Remember...God is good...all the time!

Your pastor and Friend,

Jim

"Acceptance Does Not Require Approval"
by  Rick Warren
PurposeDriven.com

"Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory."
(Romans 15:7 NLT)

Did you know that every time you show love, it gives glory to God? Because God is love, and glory is revealing what God is really like.

God says, "I am loving. I am compassionate. I want you to be like me. I want you to develop my character." You're never going to be God. You're never even going to be a teeny-tiny God. But God says he wants you to become godly. He wants you to develop his character. Like father like son, like father like daughter. He wants you to learn to love people the way he loves people. God is love.

Every time you do that, it shows God's glory.

Of course, one of the ways you love others is just by accepting them. Just because you don't like what people do doesn't mean you can't accept them.

Do you understand the difference between acceptance and approval? You can accept someone without approving of everything they do. There is a big difference! We are to accept everybody; we are not to approve everything everybody does. So no matter what people do, or who they do it with, or how they do it, or how long they do it - it doesn't matter. You are to love them. You are to accept them. It does not mean that you approve of what they do. God loves you, but it doesn't mean he approves of everything you do.

Love is not saying I approve of everything you do. Love is saying I accept you in spite of what you do.

Romans 15:7 says, "Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory" (NLT).

Youth Begin an Awesome Series: "If You Really Knew Me"

Youth Director, Tonya Stansberry and her team, began a 4 week series that shines the light on everyone's story.  We all have stories and past experiences that have shaped who we are today.  The challenge is that God calls us to love one another in spite of these pasts, and the truth is God doesn't see what others think they see in us--God looks to our hearts (1 Sam 16:7).
