Issue 19 Volume 11  - Week of May 19, 2013

From Pastor Jim

Dear FIPC Church Family,

"Seasons"

Somehow the Master of Creation, God the Father, in His infinite wisdom put together a solar system that perfectly placed a sun at the perfect distance from the earth. God also created an earth that revolved around the sun and rotated on its own axis so that there would be day and night, and four distinct seasons of the year. Sound so incredible! What an incredible God!

And here we are in Florida, and from where I come from, South Louisiana, we are lucky if we have two seasons -- green and brown with some hot and a little cool. They are still called seasons.

This week we begin a season here at FIPC, not measured by temperatures or sunlight, but by a 13 week period that Pastor Jim Weldon is on a sabbatical. It is not a stopping point for the church, but a resting period of reflection for Jim. We have several choices during this season -- we can kick back, we can keep on, or we can seek to understand during this time what we are called to be during this period of our journey together.

I had this article just about done and then I attended the weekly staff meeting of the church. I came away realizing the staff is excited about what this time will mean for the whole body. We will be celebrating Youth Sunday this week, but then the next 12 weeks we will be in a sermon series called "A Summer with Jesus." We will be looking at several of the encounters with Christ that happen in the Gospel of Matthew. Mike Horst and I are excited about the study and hope you will join us!

We will also be seeking your input on what and how we can be a community of faith for the summer. What fun can we have together? Hanging out, enjoying the season, growing closer to Christ and to each other.

I just ask one thing of you -- let's journey together this season! Let's explore this Jesus together! Let's be a community throughout this summer. Let's worship together each Sunday we are in town, and be amazed that the same God who created the incredible solar system is still around seeking to walk through the seasons of life with us!

If you have any questions or need me for any reason, please call, text, or email me!

In Christ,

Greg Cruice

Not Abandoned
by: Cindy Hess Kasper

Years ago, while my husband and I were visiting the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, we noticed a baby stroller by itself with no one nearby. We assumed that the parents had left it there because it was too bulky and were now carrying their child. But as we approached, we saw a sleeping baby inside. Where was a parent . . . a sibling . . . a babysitter? We hung around for quite some time before hailing a museum official. No one had shown up to claim that precious child! The last we saw of him, he was being wheeled away to a safe place.

That experience made me think about what it's like to be abandoned. It's an overwhelming feeling that no one cares anything about you. It's a real and excruciatingly painful feeling. But even though people may abandon us, God's love and presence is assured. The Lord promises that He will never leave us (Deut. 31:8). He will be with us wherever we go, "always, even to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:20).

The Lord will never falter in His commitment to His children. Even if we have been abandoned by others, we can find confidence in His promise that nothing will ever "separate us from [His] love" (Rom. 8:35-39).

Father, thank You for Your never-failing presence in every aspect of our lives. We count on Your promise never to abandon us. Please teach us to rest in that truth. In Jesus' name, amen. Confidence in God's presence is our comfort.
This Week's Funnies

A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17."

The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up.

The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."

At a nursing home a group of Seniors were sitting around talking about all their ailments. "My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee," said one.
"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are so bad I can't even see my coffee."
"I couldn't even punch out the chad at election time, my hands are so crippled," volunteered a third.
"What? Speak up! What? I can't hear you!"
"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck," said a fourth, to which several nodded weakly in agreement.
"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy!" exclaimed another.
"I forget where I am, and where I'm going," said another.
"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old," winced an old man as he slowly shook his head. The others nodded in agreement.
"Well, count your blessings," said one woman cheerfully ...."Thank God we can all still drive!"
