FIPC Newsletter

Issue 13 Volume 11  - Week of April 7, 2013

From Pastor Jim

Dear FIPC Church Family,

You are probably curious about the orange post card you received in the mail or in your church bulletin Sunday. The post card read, "$1.3 Million in Ministries!" on one side and the other side read, "I believe you can do that much ministry if you join me in First Fruits!" and was signed God.

What was the purpose of the postcard? We are in the midst of asking all our members and friends to seriously pray about their financial commitment to God in and through this church. We have begun what we are calling "First Fruit Ministry" to address this vital part of Christian maturity.

What is First Fruits? In biblical times, most people earned a living in agricultural. They would bring the first 10% of their crop (i.e. First Fruits) and give it to God as God has commanded. Giving the First Fruits symbolized their faith and trust in God, as well as their commitment and obedience to God's will for their life.

Where did we get $1.3 million? Based on the demographics of the area around our church, if each family in our church simply tithed their income (gave 10% of their income to God through this First Fruits Ministry), this church could be doing $1.3 million in ministries. This would more than double the amount of ministries we were able to do last year and virtually eliminate the need for any extra fundraisers.

Are we willing to give back to God 10% of the time, talent, and treasure, God has blessed us with? Are we willing to obey God's command to:

Malachi 3:10 (MSG) "Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don't open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams."

Are we willing to let our giving reflect the biblical principles found in scripture and give to God our First Fruit? Are we willing to give to God our very best?

Over the next few weeks, we will be sending to you some important information about what it takes to do the ministries God has placed on our hearts. Please read through this information carefully. We want you to partner with God and this church to help make that happen. How? By prayerfully considering your financial commitment to God and bringing a simple tithe.

During worship on April 21st, we are asking everyone to turn in a First Fruits Ministry Commitment card. You will receive these cards in the mail next week or in your church bulletin on the 21st. This is a card in which you can estimate how you plan to respond to God's call to bring the First Fruits to God. After that worship service, we will have a free luncheon to celebrate everyone's commitment to God in bringing their First Fruits.

The leadership of this church is behind our First Fruits Ministry and will lead by example and turn in their commitments first. We will then report to you the total amount committed by the Elders, Deacons and Staff of our church.

God is doing GREAT things in and through this church! As I always say, God is good! All the time!!

God is good! All the time!!

Grace and Peace,

Jim

Is Ambition Wrong
by: Randy Kilgore

Is ambition wrong? Is it wrong to be driven, to push to be the best? It can be. The difference between right and wrong ambition is in our goal and motivation-whether it's for God's glory or our own.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:1, Paul tells us that Christians are to live lives "to please God." For some, the drive to please Him is an instant transformation at the time of salvation; for others, the transformation is full of stutter-steps and mis-starts. Whether the change happens instantly or gradually, the Christian is to pursue God's goals, not selfish ones.

So, in the workplace we ask: "How will that job change help me serve others and glorify God?" Ambition oriented toward God is focused outward on Him and others, always asking how He has gifted us and wants to use us.

Paul suggests we work with "sincerity of heart, fearing God" (Col. 3:22). Whatever we're doing-in the board room, on the docks, wherever we're working-we're to serve as if doing it for God (vv.23-24).

We glorify Him most and enjoy Him most when we work with fervor and excellence for His pleasure, not ours. For His service and the service of others, not self-service and personal gain-because He deserves our all.

Lord, help me to apply zest to my work efforts that I might please You. I offer my actions and words today as a testimony to bring You glory.
Use me today to point others to You. Amen.
"We grow small trying to be great." -Eli Stanley Jones, missionary

This Week's Funnies

"Salvation is free, but it isn't cheap."

Three students are leaving their last classes of the day.

The law student is thinking, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have coffee."

The English student is thinking, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have a latte."

The medical student is thinking, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have diabetes."

Grandpa was always going on about the good old days, and the lower cost of living, in particular. "When I was a kid, my mom could send me to the store, and I'd get a salami, two pints of milk, 6 oranges, 2 loaves o' bread, a magazine, and some new blue jeans...all for a dollar!!"

Then Grandpa said sadly, "You can't DO that anymore.....they got those video cameras everywhere you look."

While reviewing math symbols with my second-grade pupils, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, "Does anyone remember what these mean?"

A few moments passed, and then a boy confidently raised his hand. "One means fast-forward," he exclaimed, "and the other means rewind

"Remember God is not surprised by your inabilities, your imperfections, or your faults. He has always known everything about you that you are just now finding out, and He chose you on purpose for Himself."

- Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two other sides gently compressed by a thigh master.

- His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

- She grew on him like E. coli and he was room temperature beef.

- He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

- She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs.

- The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

- She had a deep throaty genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before he throws up.

- He was so deeply in love when she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.
