Issue 5 Volume 11  - Week of February 4, 2013

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

I was doing my daily quiet time and found this quote...

"The greatest need in the world is the transformation of human nature. We need a new heart that will not have lust and greed and hate in it. We need a heart filled with love and peace and joy, and that is why Jesus came into the world. He died on the cross to make peace between us and God and to change us from within by His Spirit. He can change you, if you will turn to Him in repentance and faith." - Billy Graham

Isn't that true. If we as human beings could let God through His Holy Spirit replace the lust, greed, and hate in our hearts with love, peace, and joy, it would rock our world!

Billy Graham tells us how to let God do that. Jesus died on the cross to make peace between us and God.  Now God wants to grow us up from the inside out by the Holy Spirit. As we enter February, the month we celebrate our loved ones, our prayer could be that God would continue His work in our heart through the Holy Spirit. I hope this month is full of the joy which repentance and faith brings.

Please be praying for our Missionaries while they are in Haiti this week serving the Lord:

Pete Sites

Jim Weldon

Jennifer Weldon

Maria Mack

David Haznedl

Kristi Haznedl

Tim Worthy

Remember, God is good! All the time!

Grace and Peace,

Jim

NEW SERMON SERIES

Does God have a way of seeing Time, Talent, and Treasures?

February 10, 17, 24 with Rev. Greg Cruice

A discipleship journey into the three elements of stewardship: Time, Talent, and Treasure.

  1. Is there a Biblical order of time as God would like to see it used?
  2. Did God ever give us hints about how time should be viewed?
  3. Is there something we can learn about talents, Spiritual gifts, how to use them, where to use them?
  4. And why does Christ talk so much about money in Scripture?

Greg will be teaching an 8:30 am class each Sunday to go a little deeper and probe your questions and thoughts.  Following worship join Greg in the gathering area for questions, answers and a brief discussion.

The Stewardship of Life involves the time, talent and treasures God gives us to manage

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional
by: Cindy Hess Kasper

One summer I was at a gathering of old high school acquaintances when someone behind me tapped me on my shoulder. As my eyes drifted over the woman's name tag, my mind drifted back in time. I remembered a tightly folded note that had been shoved through the slot on my locker. It had contained cruel words of rejection that had shamed me and crushed my spirit. I remember thinking, Somebody needs to teach you a lesson on how to treat people! Although I felt as if I were reliving my adolescent pain, I mustered up my best fake smile; and insincere words began coming out of my mouth.

We began to converse. A sad story of a difficult upbringing and of an unhappy marriage began to pour out of her. As it did, the words "root of bitterness" from Hebrews 12:15 popped into my head. That's what I'm feeling, I thought. After all these years, I still had a deep root of bitterness hidden within me, twisting around and strangling my heart.

Then these words came to my mind: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Rom. 12:21).

We talked. We even shared some tears. Neither of us mentioned the long-ago incident. God taught someone a lesson that afternoon-a lesson of forgiveness and of letting go of bitterness. He taught it to me.

Dear Lord, please help me not to harbor resentment and bitterness in my heart. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, enable me to let go of my bitterness and forgive those who have hurt me.
Revenge imprisons us; forgiveness sets us free.

This Week's Funnies

A couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, "Relatives of yours?"

"Yep," the husband replied, "In-laws."

An Army private filling out a questionnaire for a correspondence course was stymied by the question, "How long has your present employer been in business?"

He thought for a moment, then wrote, "Since 1776."

The doctor finished his examination and asked the patient to step into his office.

"Sit down, Mr. Kaysen. After looking at these test results, I recommend that you have an operation immediately."

The man thought for a moment, "How will this affect my hobby, Doctor?"
    "What's your hobby?"
    "Saving money!"

In a church one Sunday morning, a preacher said, "Anyone with 'special needs' who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the front by the altar."

With that, Bill got in line, and when it was his turn, the preacher asked, "Bill, what do you want me to pray about for you?"

Bill replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing."

The preacher put one finger of one hand in Bill's ear, placed his other hand on top of Bill's head, and then prayed and prayed and prayed, and the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.

After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Bill, how is your hearing now?"

Bill answered, "I don't know. It ain't 'til Thursday."

A TV can insult your intelligence, but nothing rubs it in like a computer.

Joey and his classmates had just finished a tour of the local fire hall.

Before each student could leave, the fire chief quizzed him.

The fire chief asked little Joey, "What do you do if your clothes catch on fire?"

Joey replied promptly, "I don't put them on."

The young lady said to Grandpa, "I noticed that when you sneeze, you've learned to put your hand in front of your mouth."

"Of course," explained Grandpa. "How else can I catch my teeth???"

An executive was interviewing a young woman for a position in his company. He wanted to find out something about her personality so he asked, "If you could have a conversation with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"

The girl responded confidently, "The living one!"

During his sermon, our pastor quoted Matthew 19:19, "Love your neighbor as yourself." To emphasize the point, he asked three times, with increasing intensity: "Who is my neighbor? Who is my neighbor? Who is my neighbor?!"

Each time he asked, a young boy behind us answered (mimicking the pastor's intensity, but not quite as loud): "Mister Rogers! Mister Rogers! Mister Rogers!"

A bill collector came to my house the other day, so I gave him a nice big stack of old bills.
