FIPC Newsletter

Issue 44 Volume 10  - Week of November 4, 2012

From Pastor Jim

Dear Friends,

I am still in awe and very grateful and thankful for how you helped out so willingly with our Fall Festival!  Thanks to everyone!!  If you have any feedback as to how we can make this event better next year, please email your suggestion to me.

Two of our Elders are going to jail!  This Friday, two of our Elders, Burl White and Phil White, will be locked up in Putnam County Jail.  They are helping to lead a Kairos weekend for the men who are inmates.  Kairos is a Cursillo ministry which is similar to the Great Banquet weekend we are involved in.  Except the Kairos weekend takes place with the inmates in prison.

Both of these men will be there proclaiming the gospel of Christ to men who really need to hear that message.  Let's be sure to keep Phil and Burl in our prayers.  We look forward to hearing how this weekend went.

Hope to see you at our Operation Christmas Child packing party this Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the worship building.

God is GOOD!  ALL the time!

Your pastor and friend...

This Week's Devotional
This Week's Devotional

My childhood piano teacher was a stickler for memorization. Being able to play a piece without error was not enough. I had to play several pieces flawlessly by memory. Her reasoning was this: She didn't want her students to say, when asked to play, "I'm sorry, I don't have my music with me."

As a child, I also memorized Bible passages, including Psalm 119:11. Due to my limited understanding, I believed that simple memorization would keep me from sin. I worked hard at memorizing verses, and I even won a Moody Bible Story Book as an award.

Although memorizing the Bible is a good habit to develop, it's not the act of memorizing that keeps us from sin. As I learned soon after my winning efforts, having the words of Scripture in my head made little difference in my behavior. In fact, instead of victory over sin, knowledge alone generated feelings of guilt.

Eventually I realized that the Word of God had to spread through my whole being. I needed to internalize Scripture, to hide it "in my heart" the way a musician does a piece of music. I had to live the Bible as well as I could quote it. As God's Word spreads from our heads to our hearts, sin loses its power over us.

O Lord, my God, may Your Word become so
much a part of me that obedience comes
naturally and cheerfully from my heart.
Change me and mold me into Your image.
Let God's Word fill your memory, rule your heart, and guide your life.

This Week's Funnies

This guy decides to go ice fishing. He collects his gear, goes out onto the ice, pulls out an auger and starts drilling.

LOUD VOICE FROM ABOVE: "There are no fish there."

So the guy goes to another spot and starts to drill.

LOUD VOICE FROM ABOVE: "There's no fish there, either."

Undaunted, the guy tries a third spot.

LOUD VOICE FROM ABOVE: "Nope. Not there either."

The guy is getting a little nervous. He looks up and calls out: "Are you God?

LOUD VOICE FROM ABOVE: "No. I'm the arena manager."

Did you ever want to call a maternity ward and ask if they deliver?

While riding the bus, my mother noticed a young man, who was holding onto the same pole, staring at her. Eventually, he said, "Excuse me. This is my stop."
Since she wasn't blocking his way, she was confused. "Well," she said, "go ahead."      "And this is my pole," he said.      My mother was completely perplexed until the young man added, "I just bought it at the hardware store to hold up my shower curtain."
And with that, he picked up his pole and carried it off the bus.

I was playing tooth fairy when my daughter, Marina, suddenly woke up. Seeing the money in my hand, she cried out, "I caught you!"
I froze and tried to think of an explanation for why I, instead of the tooth fairy, was putting the money under her pillow but her next words let me off the hook.      "You put that money back!" she said indignantly. "The tooth fairy left that for me!"
