Fun at the Office

Looking to have a little fun tomorrow on April Fool's Day?Here are a couple ways to "celebrate":

If you're feeling particularly mischievous, you might want to give up your lunch for this one.  If you have any work friends who you know aren't the most technologically adept, you can exploit their typing inefficiencies by switching the letters on their computer keyboard. All you'll need is a screwdriver to pop out the letter keys. Just select a few so it's not obvious just by looking at the keyboard.

Mouse Gone Bad

Apply a piece of clear scotch tape to the underside of the mouse, covering the laser. Using a Sharpie or other marker, color the area of the tape that the laser passes through. Most people will bang their mouse on the table for a few minutes before looking underneath.

Spring Cleaning

Account reconciliation is an under-appreciated yet critical control to help ensure an organization's financial integrity. Weaknesses and inefficiencies in the reconciliation process often lead to mistakes on the balance sheet and overall inaccuracies in the financial close.

Since the enactment of Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) and other rules and regulations that have followed, ensuring the accuracy of account reconciliations has become increasingly important. If the auditor finds a material error, the company may be required to disclose a failure of controls. And, if the auditor finds a misstatement while reviewing the quarterly or annual SEC reports that the company cannot prove it would have found on its own, then the error is determined to be a material misstatement and a material weakness that could also require disclosure.

An accurate and timely financial close cycle, beginning with the account reconciliation process, can create a foundation for evaluating business performance and satisfying external reporting requirements. Automation of the account reconciliation process is a critical step to achieving "balance sheet integrity", but software alone will not ensure account reconciliations are accurate. That's why the professionals at Off-Site Business Services provide business owners the security of a reviewing their business bank, credit card and loan accounts.

Good tools and processes provide a framework for ensuring quality, accuracy, and completeness. At Off-Site Business Services, we provide a methodology to track assignments and monitor due dates and work completion.

The Biggest Challenge Facing Your Small Business is ...

Starting a business is a big achievement for many entrepreneurs, but maintaining one is the larger challenge. There are many standard challenges that face every business whether they are large or small. These include things like hiring the right people, building a brand and so on. However, there are some that are unique to small businesses - ones most large companies have grown out of long ago. Here is the last in the series of the Biggest Challenges Facing Your Small Business (from contributor Andrew Beattie in Investopedia).

Final Week:  Balancing Quality and Growth

Even when a business is not founder dependent, there comes a time when the issues from growth seems to match or even outweigh the benefits. Whether a service or a product, at some point a business must sacrifice in order to scale - this may mean not being able to personally manage every client relationship or not inspecting every widget.

Unfortunately, it is usually that level of personal engagement and that attention to detail that makes a business semi-successful. Therefore, many small business owners often find themselves tied to these habits to the detriment of the company's growth. There is a large middle ground between shoddy work and an unhealthy obsession with quality, so it is up to the business owner to navigate the company's processes towards a compromise that allows scale without hurting the brand.
