 Fixing Circular References in Excel

A client of mine had a spreadsheet that had a "circular reference" message pop up every time they opened the file. A circular reference means that a formula is trying to calculate its own cell.

If your spreadsheet contains a lot of data, and you cannot easily locate the cell creating the circular reference, there is an easy way to find it.

Click the Formulas tab. Under Formula Auditing, click the down arrow next to Error Checking. Hover your mouse over Circular Reference. It will display the cell address with a circular reference. If there is more than one, all cell addresses with circular references will be listed. Click on the cell listed.

In the example below, cell D3 is trying to calculate cells D1, D2 and D3 (itself)creating a circular reference. The formula can be corrected in the cell it is in, or cut and pasted to a difference cell.

Ideas for  Getting New Clients

One of the first managers I ever worked for gave the best advice for finding new business: "Don't talk to another person in the same line of work as you, talk to a someone in a completely different field. A person in your own industry has the same ideas for getting new clients you do. If you are in the finance industry, a paint salesman may give you a new idea."

Last week, I had lunch with one of my long time clients, who is a home
remodeler/contractor. We discussed the marketing successes and failures we have tried. He does something I found very interesting. All of the major do-it-yourself home improvement stores have a bulletin board for contractors to display their business cards. Oddly enough, he does not put any business cards there. He puts his business cards in a paint store where all of the other business cards are for painters. He is the only remodeler on that board and gets a few calls every week.

That got me to thinking. Last Saturday, I went to a business expo for the local chamber of commerce. Most of the vendors there were hospitals, banks, and insurance companies. While I did come away with a couple of potential prospects, the meeting with my client last week got me thinking. What prospects might I find if I went to a home improvement or other industry specific expo? Something to think about.

Are You Ready for the Holidays?

Yes, it's only mid-October, but have you started thinking about your holiday business giving? Most holiday business card companies are still offering early bird discounts.

Omaha Steaks has delayed shipping. You order your gifts now, but they won't ship until December. Many other online gift sites allow you to do this as well.

Our upcoming issues will cover mail merge for holiday cards. Stay tuned!
