Some unexpected but positive changes have occurred for this years Guides. Due to a family obligation, Nancy Peterson is unable to help this year and Jane Lindsey has an unexpected opportunity to travel to Malaysia with her husband for six weeks.

However attendees are in luck as we have two incredibly qualified leaders to lead our 15th year to SLC.

Lisa Gorrell, our current Recording secretary, has extensive genealogical experience in the U.S. as well as Germany, Canada, and Sweden. She has been to SLC many times (twice this year) and is well acquainted with the library and its resources.

Jim Sorenson, also a CGS board member and a member of our well respected research team, will work with Lisa as co-leader. Jim has been doing research for many years. He is well verse in many areas due to the varied research projects received by the team. He also does Swedish research. Jim can be reached at jsorenson@californiaancestors.org.

Spots are filling up for the 25th Salt Lake City Trip (April 26-May3). The final day to guarantee your spot is March 15th. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Gorrell at lgorrell@californiaancestors.org.

Ancestor Tribute
by Linda Harms Okazaki, CGS President

My great grandfather, William Ambrose, must have been quite the adventurer. Born in January 1860 near Maidstone, England. The identity of his parents remains a mystery. He joined the Royal Navy around the age of 18 and sailed to Sydney, Australia where he lived for a number of years.

In 1887 he traveled to San Diego and worked at the Hotel Del Coronado before heading north. He met his future wife, Tushia Corville, in Healdsburg. They married in San Francisco on her 17th birthday. After filing his intent to become a naturalized citizen, Will became a night watchman at the Quarantine Station on Angel Island. Tushia divorced him shortly thereafter. He worked on the island for 11 years before his employment was severed, most likely due to chronic illness.

William Ambrose died in San Francisco on 31 August 1927. According to family lore, his failing health was due both a broken heart and to the long term exposure to fumigants used on Angel Island.

We enjoy honoring members' ancestors. Please email a photo to Lorna Wallace, along with a short summary about why the ancestor featured is important or interesting to you. Photos should be in .jpg format with a file size over 100 kb; photos and text may be edited for space.
