Editor's Note
A New Year and New Opportunities
Happy New Year to our more than 3,500 eNews subscribers!

A brand-new year typically involves resolutions, the setting of goals, and sometimes changes. What will you do in 2015? Will you explore a new branch on your family tree, hammer away on one of your brick walls, build new "search" skills, or write a summary of a particular family group or line? The possibilities are endless!

For me, the new year brings a change in my role at the California Genealogical Society: I'll be transferring the editorship of the eNews to CGS member, Stewart Blandn Traiman.

I will continue to serve on the Board of Directors and I'm looking forward to supporting the society in other ways. It's been a pleasure and honor to be the editor of CGS's eNews this past year. Read on to "meet" Stewart!

I'm pleased to announce that Stewart Blandn Traiman will be the new editor for the California Genealogical Society's eNews, beginning in February.

Stewart is an internist currently working as a clinical informaticist turning data into medical information. And he's found a way to use those skills for his genealogy work -- raising data to the status of substantive information. He's been tracing family roots in Poland, Ukraine, Nicaragua, Canada, Ireland, and the USA for 25 years. He lives in Alameda with his husband and children.

Ancestor Tribute: Deep California Roots
A Hard-Working Sierra Lumberman
By Susan Young, member since 1998
Winnie Smith next to one of the sugar pine trees he felled. Winnie was 5' 11" tall, so the tree was close to 6' wide.
Irwin "Winnie" Albert Smith was born in Bangor, Butte Co., California on July 19, 1857, to Freedom D. Smith and Angeline Adams Smith. By the time he was 13 years old, he was living with his father in Sierra township in the Sierra Valley and was a "sawmill man" and attending school.

After his father's death in 1880, he moved on to other lumber/logging areas in the Tahoe region. In 1890 he married Nellie Capitola Welton  ("Tola") in Reno, Nevada. On October 25, 1890, he joined the Native Sons of the Golden West-Donner Parlor. For the next 25 years his main home was in Truckee, California, where he had a planing mill in 1901, a box factory in 1910, and various sawmills in the Russell Valley, on Alder Creek, on the Little Truckee River, and in the Sierra Valley.

Three sons were born to Winnie and Tola between 1892 and 1902. Several photos in E.B. Scott's The Saga of Lake Tahoe
record his logging operations around Lake Tahoe. His mill site in the Sierra Valley, the Winnie Smith Mill Site,  is recorded on the California Register of Historic Sites. (Edited by Lorna Wallace.)
