The Volunteer Corner
| New Projects for 2013 by Linda Harms Okazaki |
Please join me in welcoming our most recent member of the volunteer team, Eva Goodwin. Eva is an avid genealogist who will be working on our soon-to-be-formed "Indexing Committee."
2013 is going to be busy at CGS. We have lots of projects and activities in the works. Here's where we need some new volunteers:
Indexing - Four to six volunteers are needed for two phases: first for the planning stage, then the actual indexing of records. Indexed records are eventually added to our online "California Names Index" or become books.
eBay Book Sales - We are looking for one to three people who will run the eBay book sale project. The planning and implementation stages are complete. Now we need to set up maintenance. Time commitment: several hours a month, but flexible.
Periodicals - One to four individuals are needed to process and shelve our continually growing collection of periodicals. Time commitment: 2-4 hours per shift, 1x per week or per month, depending on your availability.
Please email Linda Okazaki if you'd like to fill one of these roles. If you want to volunteer in a different capacity or have a special skill to share, let me know.

Photo Tributes to the CGS Family
Edited by Lorna Wallace
This month, we honor Joseph Dory, Jr. and Charlotte Hellenbolt, ancestors of California Genealogical Society member Lynne A. Dory.
| Joseph and Charlotte Hellenbolt Dory |
This image is of Joseph Dory, Sr. (1786-1864) and his wife, Charlotte Hellenbolt (1801-1887). Joseph was said to have been "born at sea" 15 Jul 1786. Nothing more is known of his country or family of origin. Joseph and Charlotte were married in 1817 in Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Ontario, Canada and were the parents of ten children. There is a lake in the area called Lake Doré with an accent on the "e" so I have wondered if the family came from France and whether that may have been the original spelling of the name. One of their sons was baptized in St. Peters Church in Cobourg as Seymour Dore.
By 1860, most of the family was living in Spring Valley, Rock, Wisconsin. Joseph died in 1864 in Allamakee, Iowa, where the Dory family resided and multiplied for quite a number of years.
-Lynne A. Dory
Call For Submissions - Are you a member with a great family photo to share? If you would like to pay tribute to your ancestor in a future edition of the eNews, please email Lorna Wallace and send your image with a brief narrative. |
