DO SOMETHING BIG, GENEROUS AND MEMORABLE A
 Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Emerging Leaders Society, I would like to personally thank you for attending our events this past year. With your support we have "networked for a cause," "brightened the way," "rocked sunglasses in the summertime" and rode bikes to "spin for kids."

Please join us for our last event of 2013 - Happy Hour, Hockey and Holiday Cheer on Friday, December 13th beginning at 5 p.m. at Pig's Eye Pub in Hartford.

Come network with other young professionals during a fun night out full of festivities. During the evening you'll enjoy:
  • Drinks and appetizers;
  • A prize drawing and competition to win a 3-in-1 game table;
  • An ugly sweater contest;
  • A Hartford Wolfpack game; and,
  • The opportunity to brighten the holiday season for a local child served by The Village for Families & Children by donating a new, unwrapped toy.

Cheers to a great 2013 and to an even better year ahead in 2014!

Best Wishes and Happy New Year,

MEMBERS' SPOTLIGHT!
 Two Can Win this Race. B

Photographed above: (R to L) Maia Brooks and Kia Murrell.

Maia Brooks, United Technologies Aerospace Systems, is a member of the ELS special events subcommittee. She led the Emerging Leaders Society's efforts to organize and execute Spin for Kids - a spin-a-thon to benefit children's academic achievement. Spin for Kids was held at the Wilson-Gray YMCA on Sunday, November 3 and included 39 individuals who rode stationary bikes. The event was the most successful fundraiser that United Way's Emerging Leaders Society has had to date, raising more than $5,000 for our children and families in our community.  Maia's drive, planning and execution inspired us to nominate her in this member spotlight. Amazing job, Maia!

Katherine Ramirez is a member of the ELS volunteerism subcommittee. She led the Emerging Leaders Society's efforts to organize and execute the Family Engagement Festival at the Alfred E. Burr Community School in Hartford on November 15.

The event was open to the community and included a puppet show by the Hispanic Health Council, a nutrition table, blood pressure screening by Hartford Hospital, internet essentials information from Comcast, massages from Capital Chiropractic, safety and injury prevention information and a 15-minute Zumba fitness classes. In addition, the Emerging Leaders Society helped children create "magic reading glasses" and students chose from an array free books to take home. The families, kids and volunteers had a really good time, and a lot of valuable information was shared. Outstanding job, Katherine!

Thank you, Maia and Katherine, for Living United!
