The Learned Owl Book Shop, August 1, 2016
Kate's Corner

Happy August! The Wizarding World is alive and well, as witnessed by people all over the world this past Saturday night. J.K. Rowling has done it again. She somehow managed to find just the right way to carry on the Harry Potter legacy.

I was so skeptical last April when news of the 8th Harry Potter story broke. I assumed it could never live up, and we would have another Harper Lee situation on our hands. Well, you know what they say about people that assume. The parties and festivals across the globe were yet another testament to the power of the written word to transform lives. We have proof on what has to be my favorite thing that came out of our own party: the "What Harry Potter means to me" poster still hanging in the store. If you have a chance, please come in, see it, and add your thoughts. In our current political climate, I think it is exactly the dose of magic that Madam Pomfrey ordered.

Thank you all for your support, and happy reading!
- Kate

Summer reads:
The final fling

by Sarah Maine
[Atria Books, $16.00; available Aug. 2]
Liz recommends: Fabulous book. A perfect summer read, with history and romance blended in two tales of two women in love and struggling to find their own voices, a century apart. [read more]

by B. A. Paris
[St. Martin's, $25.99; available Aug. 9]
Linda recommends: OK, admit it. You do it. We all do it. We see how other people live and interact, we look at their homes, we imagine how perfect their lives must be, and we wonder "How do they do it?" Of course, we can never really know about what happens behind closed doors... The story of the perfect marriage of Jack and Grace is tightly wrapped in a layer of tension like nothing I have ever experienced before. One of the best psychological thrillers you will ever read, and it will take you no time at all because you will not be able to sleep until you learn the fate of these two people.
by Liane Moriarty
[Flatiron Books, $26.99]
Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It's just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don't say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm. Josie and her husband have split up, she's been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she's grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancee's family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation: They see bears and bison, they eat hot dogs cooked on a bonfire, and they spend nights parked along icy cold rivers in dark forests. But as they drive, pushed north by the ubiquitous wildfires, Josie is chased by enemies both real and imagined, past mistakes pursuing her tiny family, even to the very edge of civilization.

"We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. We have the power to imagine better."
- J.K. Rowling, Harvard University Commencement Address (2008)
