The Learned Owl Book Shop, April 15, 2016

 Kate's Corner

Happy sunshiny April days! At the risk of jinxing us, I'm going to say it out loud: I'm thrilled that spring is finally here. These few weeks when everything is budding and coming alive are some of my favorite of the year.

This year, to make things even better, we will be celebrating our second annual Independent Bookstore Day. On April 30th, Independent Booksellers all over the country, publishers, and wholesalers are coming together to celebrate Independent Bookshops in all their diverse and beautiful glory. We will have lots of specialty items including a Neil Gaiman coloring book and a Curious George plush toy. We will open an hour early at 9 AM on April 30 with Mimosas.

There will also be giveaways and discounts throughout the day, and a signing with Columbus author Robin Yocum. We will even have a passport with the location of various Independent Bookshops in the Cleveland and Akron area for you to explore. If you visit everyone, you will be entered in a drawing for more literary prizes.

So mark your calendars and make a day of it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

As always, thank you for your support,
Kate

New memoir & biography

by Augusten Burroughs
[St. Martin's Press, $26.99]
In chronicling the development and demise of the different relationships he's had while living in New York, Burroughs examines what it means to be in love, what it means to be in lust, and what it means to be figuring it all out. With Augusten's unique and singular observations and his own unabashed way of detailing both the horrific and the humorous, Lust & Wonder is an intimate and honest memoir that his legions of fans have been waiting for.

Lab GirlLab Girl by Hope Jahren

Lab Girl is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren's remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom's labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done with both the heart and the hands; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.

History & change

by Howard Means
[Da Capo Press, $25.99]
The Kent State shootings were both unavoidable and preventable: unavoidable in that all the discordant forces of a turbulent decade flowed together on May 4, 1970, on one Ohio campus; preventable in that every party to the tragedy made the wrong choices at the wrong time in the wrong place.
Using the university's recently available oral-history collection supplemented by extensive new interviewing, Means tells the story of this iconic American moment through the eyes and memories of those who were there, and skillfully situates it in the context of a tumultuous era.

by Andrew Solomon
[Scribner Book Company, $30.00; April 19]
Far and Away collects Andrew Solomon's writings about places undergoing seismic shifts - political, cultural, and spiritual. Chronicling his stint on the barricades in Moscow in 1991, when he joined artists in resisting the coup whose failure ended the Soviet Union, his 2002 account of the rebirth of culture in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban, his insightful appraisal of a Myanmar seeped in contradictions as it slowly, fitfully pushes toward freedom, and many other stories of profound upheaval, this book provides a unique window onto the very idea of social change. With his signature brilliance and compassion, Solomon demonstrates both how history is altered by individuals, and how personal identities are altered when governments alter.
