The Learned Owl Book Shop, April 15, 2016
 Kate's Corner

Happy sunshiny April days! At the risk of jinxing us, I'm going to say it out loud: I'm thrilled that spring is finally here. These few weeks when everything is budding and coming alive are some of my favorite of the year.

This year, to make things even better, we will be celebrating our second annual Independent Bookstore Day. On April 30th, Independent Booksellers all over the country, publishers, and wholesalers are coming together to celebrate Independent Bookshops in all their diverse and beautiful glory. We will have lots of specialty items including a Neil Gaiman coloring book and a Curious George plush toy. We will open an hour early at 9 AM on April 30 with Mimosas.

There will also be giveaways and discounts throughout the day, and a signing with Columbus author Robin Yocum. We will even have a passport with the location of various Independent Bookshops in the Cleveland and Akron area for you to explore. If you visit everyone, you will be entered in a drawing for more literary prizes.

So mark your calendars and make a day of it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

As always, thank you for your support,
Kate

New: Bears!

by David Litchfield
[Clarion Books, $16.99]
One day a bear cub finds something strange and wonderful in the forest. When he touches the keys, they make a horrible noise. Yet he is drawn back again and again. Eventually, he learns to play beautiful sounds, delighting his woodland friends. Then the bear is invited to share his sounds with new friends in the city. He longs to explore the world beyond his home, and to play bigger and better than before. But he knows that if he leaves, the other bears will be very sad...
Kate says: Beautifully heartwarming! Goes to show no matter where you go, you can always come home.

A couple more new favorites

by Dan Santat
[Little, Brown, $17.99]
Every parent has heard this classic kid question on a long car ride - and after reading this astonishingly inventive new book (that even turns upside down for several pages!), you'll never look at being bored the same way again.
Let's face it: Everyone knows that car rides can be boring. And when things get boring, time slows down. In this book, a boy feels time slowing down so much that it starts going backward - into the time of pirates! Of princesses! Of dinosaurs! The boy was just trying to get to his grandmother's birthday party, but instead he's traveling through Ancient Egypt and rubbing shoulders with Ben Franklin. When time flies, who knows where - or
when - he'll end up.

He looks everywhere - in his cupboard, underneath the floorboards - even in his walls. But while he's busy tearing his house apart, he doesn't notice one tiny, squeaky, mouse-shaped detail... Will Owl ever get a good night's sleep?
