The Learned Owl Book Shop, April 15, 2016
 Kate's Corner

Happy sunshiny April days! At the risk of jinxing us, I'm going to say it out loud: I'm thrilled that spring is finally here. These few weeks when everything is budding and coming alive are some of my favorite of the year.

This year, to make things even better, we will be celebrating our second annual Independent Bookstore Day. On April 30th, Independent Booksellers all over the country, publishers, and wholesalers are coming together to celebrate Independent Bookshops in all their diverse and beautiful glory. We will have lots of specialty items including a Neil Gaiman coloring book and a Curious George plush toy. We will open an hour early at 9 AM on April 30 with Mimosas.

There will also be giveaways and discounts throughout the day, and a signing with Columbus author Robin Yocum. We will even have a passport with the location of various Independent Bookshops in the Cleveland and Akron area for you to explore. If you visit everyone, you will be entered in a drawing for more literary prizes.

So mark your calendars and make a day of it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

As always, thank you for your support,
Kate

Our teen reviewers recommend
by Julie Buxbaum
[Delacorte Press, $17.99]
This is a book about Jessie, who, after her father eloped, is now going to a fancy new school in LA. She gets an email from Somebody-Nobody (SN), who says they will help her through her new school. She eventually realizes the feelings she has for this person, and can't help wanting to meet them... This was a quick read, and it was so realistic, I absolutely loved it.

Take the FallTake the Fall by Emily Hainsworth
[Balzer & Bray, $17.99]
This is a book about Sonia, who is attacked in the woods one night. The next morning, her best friend Gretchen's body is found at the bottom of a waterfall in the woods where Sonia was attacked. Now, Sonia is trying to find out who did it. This was a great mystery book. It was full of suspense and there were always new shocks coming up. Many things happen that you don't expect, and the end of this book will leave your jaw on the floor. This was phenomenal and exhilarating.

The End of FUN The End of Fun by Sean McGinty
[Disney-Hyperion, $17.99]
FUN - the latest in augmented reality - is fun, but it's also frustrating, glitchy, and dangerously addictive. Just when everyone else is getting on, 17-year-old Aaron O'Faolain wants off.
But first he has to complete his Application for Termination, and in order to do that he has to deal with his History - not to mention the present, including his grandfather's suicide and a series of clues that may (or may not) lead to buried treasure. As he attempts to unravel the mystery, Aaron is sidetracked again and again. Shadowed by his virtual "best friend", Homie, Aaron struggles with love, loss, dog bites, community theater, wild horses, wildfires, and the fact (deep breath) that actual reality can sometimes surprise you.

[Delacorte Press, $17.99; available April 19]
There are ghosts around every corner in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine, and has been trying not to think about it ever since - after what happened there that last summer.
Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn't have to walk those same halls - but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the faces of her demons; and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they'll disappear for good.
Tessa and Callie have never talked about what they saw that night. But ever since she left, Tessa has had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette - to Wyatt Stokes, sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie's dead cousin; and to the one other person who may be hiding the truth.
Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer... and this time, it won't be so easy to run away.
