The Learned Owl Book Shop, March 15, 2016
 Kate's Corner

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Apparently I blinked and another year has flown by. It was a wonderful and productive year which included my first holiday season without a break down. My parents are probably the only people that can appreciate that, however I guarantee they are thankful for it.

Everything seems to be coming more naturally, and I feel I'm finally in a place to really start focusing on new programs for the store. Again, none of this would be possible without the support of all of you, and for that I am eternally grateful and forever in your debt.

As a thank you, this weekend we will be having an anniversary sale. Anyone that comes in Friday, March 18 - Sunday, March 20 and wishes us a happy anniversary will receive 20% off their total purchase. Hope to see you this weekend, and happy reading!

- Kate

Dark Territory Dark Territory: The Secret History of Cyber War by Fred Kaplan
[Simon & Schuster, $28.00]
As cyber-attacks dominate front-page news, as hackers displace terrorists on the list of global threats, and as top generals warn of a coming cyber war, few books are more timely and enlightening than Dark Territory by Slate columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Fred Kaplan. Kaplan probes the inner corridors of the National Security Agency, the beyond-top-secret cyber units in the Pentagon, the "information warfare" squads of the military services, and the national security debates in the White House, to tell this never-before-told story of the officers, policymakers, scientists, and spies who devised this new form of warfare and who have been planning - and (more often than people know) fighting - these wars for decades. From the 1991 Gulf War to conflicts in Haiti, Serbia, Syria, the former Soviet republics, Iraq, and Iran, where cyber warfare played a significant role, Dark Territory chronicles, in fascinating detail, a little-known past that shines an unsettling light on our future.

[Simon & Schuster, $28.00]

Now there's a surefire way to answer these important questions: the sprint. Designer Jake Knapp created the five-day process at Google, where sprints were used on everything from Google Search to Google X. A practical guide to answering critical business questions, Sprint is a book for teams of any size, from small startups to Fortune 100s, from teachers to nonprofits. It's for anyone with a big opportunity, problem, or idea who needs to get answers today.

Hamster Princess Hamster Princess Book 2: Of Mice and Magic by Ursula Vernon
[Dial Books, $12.99]
Katherine says: You must stop whatever you are doing and read this book immediately - especially if you're a girl between the ages of 7 and 11. Harriet is the kind of princess I would have pretended to be if I had ever played princess as a child (well, not the hamster part, but you never know). She's fierce and creative and she loves fractions - just the kind of hero you need beside you in a difficult situation involving prince-rescuing or magic spells.
