Kate's Corner

Hello everyone! It's the middle of September, and it will probably come as no surprise that I'm back on my soapbox again. This month I would like to take a moment to discuss eFairness. For a number of years now, small businesses all over the U.S. have been asking our government to close the sales tax loophole that allows online retailers to sell products without collecting sales tax. The bottom line is that the current sales tax inequity does more than negatively impact businesses - it hurts communities.

Last week the Advocates for Independent Business (AIB) launched an eFairness campaign that they are hoping will go viral. Many Local First/ Shop Local/ Independent Business Alliances organizations nationwide have created a social media campaign of Main Street customers holding up hand-written signs in support of leveling the playing field for indie businesses.

This is where I ask all of you to help us get the message out. To learn more about this issue and see examples of what you can do to help, visit indiebizadvocates.org

As always, thank you for your support, and happy reading!

- Kate

The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place
We especially recommend...

[Roaring Brook Press, $15.99; Sept. 23]

The students of St. Etheldreda's School for Girls face a bothersome dilemma. Their irascible headmistress, Mrs. Plackett, and her surly brother, Mr. Godding, have been most inconveniently poisoned at Sunday dinner. Now the school will almost certainly be closed and the girls sent home - unless these seven very proper young ladies can hide the murders and convince their neighbors that nothing is wrong. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place is a smart, hilarious Victorian romp, full of outrageous plot twists, mistaken identities, and mysterious happenings. For ages 10 and up.

Horrorstor Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix
[Quirk Books, $14.95; available Sept. 23]
Kate recommends: So much fun! Loved the format and could easily see it being made into a movie.
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.
To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they'll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.
A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, Horrorstor comes packaged in the form of a glossy mail order catalog, complete with product illustrations, a home delivery order form, and a map of Orsk's labyrinthine showroom. It's "a treat for fans of The Evil Dead or Zombieland, complete with affordable solutions for better living." (Kirkus Reviews)
