What a beautiful month it has been so far! A huge thank you to everyone that voted for us in the Beacon's Best this year. Once again, we received the award for best book shop because so many of you took the time to vote.

I'm also very proud to announce that we were honored at our regional trade show this past weekend for 45 years of continuous operation as an independent book shop. Once again, I am in awe of the history that I'm lucky enough to be a part of. As you can imagine, this year has been a little crazy, so we are not celebrating nearly as much as this landmark deserves. With that in mind, please mark your calendars for Oct. 2018, because we are going to have one heck of a bash for our 50th and I hope to see you all there!

As always, thank you for your support, and happy reading!
- Kate

How to Be a Good Wife How to Be a Good Wife by Emma J. Chapman
[St. Martin's Press, $24.99]
Marta and Hector have been married for a long time. So long, in fact, that Marta finds it difficult to remember her life before Hector. He has always taken care of her, and she has always done everything she can to be a good wife - as advised by a dog-eared manual given to her by Hector's aloof mother on their wedding day.
But now, something is changing. Small things seem off. A flash of movement in the corner of her eye, elapsed moments that she can't recall. Visions of a blonde girl in the darkness that only Marta can see. Perhaps she is starting to remember - or perhaps her mind is playing tricks on her. As Marta's visions persist and her reality grows more disjointed, it's unclear if the danger lies in the world around her, or in Marta herself. The girl is growing more real every day, and she wants something.

Map & the Territory The Map and the Territory: Risk, Human Nature, and the Future of Forecasting

by Alan Greenspan
[Penguin Press, $36.00; available Oct. 22]
Like all of us, though few so visibly, Alan Greenspan was forced by the financial crisis of 2008 to question some fundamental assumptions about risk management and economic forecasting. No one with any meaningful role in economic decision making in the world saw beforehand the storm for what it was. How had our models so utterly failed us?
To answer this question, Alan Greenspan embarked on a rigorous and far-reaching multiyear examination of how "Homo economicus" predicts the economic future, and how it can predict it better. No map is the territory; but Greenspan's approach ensures that this particular map will assist in safe journeys down many different roads, traveled by individuals, businesses, and the state.

Provence 1970Provence, 1970: M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, and the Reinvention of American Taste by Luke Barr
[Clarkson Potter Publishers, $26.00; available Oct. 22]
In the winter of 1970, more or less coincidentally, the iconic culinary figures James Beard, M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, Richard Olney, Simone Beck, and Judith Jones found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate, talked and argued, about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. Without quite realizing it, they were shaping today's tastes and culture, the way we eat now.
