Kate's Corner

KateAs I sit at my desk late into the evening under the soft glow of my wise old owl light, I see a great future for our shop. Tomorrow marks two months for me at the helm of the Owl, and each day I rise with a smile. I come to the store knowing I am among family and friends, and not a day has passed that someone has not taken the time to introduce themselves and ask how everything is going. I can't tell you all how much this means to me. Thanks to Liz and all of the amazing people here, the transition has been a smooth one.

This month also marks the return of the Learned Owl Book Club to The Learned Owl. We had a great turn out yesterday with a lively discussion of The Orchardist, and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next month. We have many more wonderful events lined up for May as well as the kickoff to our summer writer's workshop series in June. It's shaping up to be a fun-filled summer, and I look forward to seeing you all. Happy reading!

TwerpTwerp by Mark Goldblatt

[Random House, $16.99; available May 28]

Katherine says: This is a tremendous book, full of humor and heart, that is all about why people go along with the crowd when someone else is being hurt, and (more importantly) about what it takes to make up for the damage that's been done. It would make a wonderful starting point for a discussion on bullying. For ages 9-12.

Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage

[Puffin Books, $7.99; available May 16]

Kate says: It is a great novel for parents and kids. The writing is funny and smart. It addresses real life situations without being too scary for the targeted age. I loved it so much I made my dad read it and I can't tell you the number of times I caught him laughing out loud at Mo's wit and charm. For ages 10-13.
