Future Talent
Greater Lowell Technical High School pre-engineering students visiting WH Bagshaw Company
There is a shallow pool of skilled talent in U.S. manufacturing. For our country and businesses to compete domestically and internationally, we must encourage students at an early age, and just as importantly their parents, to explore manufacturing as a rewarding career option. The Alcoa Foundation recently published results of their 2015 Parents' Perceptions of Manufacturing Survey
The survey found that "87 percent of parents believe a STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math] education is critical for economic success" yet "34 percent do not think jobs in the manufacturing or trade industries require college or higher education." Another misperception found was that "89 percent of parents estimate the average hourly wage of manufacturing jobs to be between $7 and $22 per hour, where the average is much higher at $34 per hour.'' It should be no surprise then as to the shortage of skilled talent in manufacturing.
Make it happen!
