Canadian Rockies Ski Racing Hall of Fame Celebrates The Ski Racing Family

Above are the 2013 and 2014 inductees into the Canadian Ski Racing Hall of Fame. Left to right: Jeff Durand, Patty Schwartz, David Kent, Ken Marchand, Joe Irwin, Lynne Richardson, Darrell MacLachlan, Ron Measures.

Laughter, reminiscing and tall-tales were the order of the evening, as the ski racing family gathered Monday evening to celebrate the induction of four ski racing legends into the Canadian Rockies Ski Racing Hall of Fame. It was also a chance to acknowledge current champions Jan Hudec and Brady Leman and to salute the next generation with the introduction of the 2014-15 Alberta Ski Team.

The focus of the evening centred on four "legends" of our sport. Each Inductee has a long history with ski racing, supported by family connections and the well-established network of the ski club system. For Lifetime Volunteer Patty Schwartz, "over 40 years of attending races and helping out as a volunteer is so rewarding because I get to see how these young athletes move from Nancy Greene League races right to the Olympics. I watched Thomas Grandi and Shona Rubens in their first races and in the Olympics - and that's cool!" [Read more]

Help promote Kids Zone Area at World Cup

There is an interesting volunteer opportunity coming up with Alberta Alpine. We are requesting your help with staffing of the Kids Zone Area at the Finish area of the Winterstart Lake Louise Alpine Ski World Cup this year.

The responsibilities consist of staffing the Kids Zone with a responsible person (or two or three if many want to consecutively help) who would provide assistance to the children who come in to the Kids Zone area, offer them hot chocolate and marshmallows and assist around the fire pit.

The details surrounding the Kids Zone are below. A club could take this opportunity to offer volunteer hours to their members perhaps, but we do need at least one person per shift.  Volunteers do not need to be skiers, the distance from the base lodge to the Finish line is less than a 5 minute walk.

Days / Shift Hours

Men's DH Sat. Nov. 29th 10:30 am - 2:30 PM     3 PEOPLE PLEASE

Men's SG Sun. Nov. 30th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm    3 PEOPLE PLEASE

Ladies DH Sat. Dec. 6th 11:30 am - 3:30 pm      3 PEOPLE PLEASE

Ladies SG Sun. Dec. 7th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm      3 PEOPLE PLEASE

Winterstart Events will provide the Kids Zone with the following: Fire pits, Winterstart Postcards, Soccer Balls, Hockey sticks, nets and an enclosed area for the soccer / hockey field, marshmallow sticks and garbage cans

Alberta Alpine will provide the Kids Zone with the following: MANPOWER!!!  Banners, hot chocolate and cups, marshmallows, sharpies for autographs - there are 2 large urns per day from LLSA to be delivered to Kids Zone.

Upon arrival at the hill - Please contact Chris Colpitts, who will be assisting with the set up and tear down of the Kids Zone daily.  His cell is 604-932-0785 and will be on site to help.

Thank you for helping Alberta Alpine make this a great event for the kids to come and watch our National Alpine Ski Team athletes compete in the 2014 Winterstart World Cup!

Please let us know if you would be able to help!  Email Sue Schwartz at sue@albertalpine.ca Thank you!!

In July, new federal legislation made it necessary for people to "opt-in" for existing mailing and distribution lists. As it was summer, many may not have seen or realized the requirement for action to stay connect with Alberta Alpine news. Canadians Open World Cup Slalom Season at Levi, Finland

Banff Alpine Racers Philp & Read make up half of the men's Canadian Team

CANMORE, ALTA. (November 21, 2014) - Canada sent four male athletes for the traditional opening slalom of the World Cup season, including Banff Alpine Racers Trevor Philp and Erik Read, both of Canmore.

Top Canadian was Julien Cousineau of Mt. Tremblant Ski Club, finishing in 16th in this comeback race after knee surgery in the spring and only 8 days on snow prior to the event.

Philp narrowly missed the top thirty by 0.11 and placing 34th after the first run (only the top 30 compete in the 2nd run). Read 'tipped over going for it" on the steep pitch in the middle of the Levi Black Slalom course and did not finish. The only other Canadian in the event was Phil Brown of the Craigleith Ski Club in Ontario who finished 62nd after the first run.

Brown, Philp and Read will remained in Levi to compete in Europa Cup giant slalom and slalom races, before returning to North American and the opening Nor-Am Cup races in Aspen and Copper Mountain, Colorado.
