Nigel Loring Named Next President of Alberta Alpine

Building on a legacy of success, Alberta Alpine is very pleased to announce that Nigel Loring has accepted the position of President, effective September 1, 2014. Loring replaces Adam Hull, who will be leaving the post on August 22nd after four years at the helm of the organization.

"Alberta Alpine is very pleased to welcome Nigel to our team. After a thorough search process, we feel fortunate to have found someone with Nigel's extensive experience and track record of success. He is joining an organization that is in great shape both financially and athletically. On behalf of the Board of Directors - "Welcome aboard, Nigel," said Board Chair, Bob Leitch.

Loring has held the position of Executive Director of Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) since 2009. Among his greatest achievements in the role were spearheading the post-Olympic development of the Dave Murray National Training Centre, promoting international competition at the Whistler Cup, and building a great culture of excellence in the club and the community.

Proud of his tenure with WMSC, Loring is thrilled to take the reins of Alberta Alpine "WMSC was a great experience with many memorable times working with some really great people. I was fortunate to be surrounded by so many super stars in our sport, from great professionals and volunteers to gold medal winning athletes," stated Loring.

When asked about what he was most looking forward to accomplishing in Alberta, Loring was quick to point out it is all about people. "Our unique sport culture brings great people together - collectively, I believe, we can do really great things. I look forward to meeting and working closely with the entire Alberta Alpine family. Adam Hull has done a fantastic job and I wish him well in his future endeavors. I am very honored to assume this prestigious role and I will continue to focus on keeping Alberta as the top performing province," said Loring.

"The season kicks off for Alberta Alpine with the Quest for Gold Golf Tournament, which is set for September 8th at Silvertip Golf Resort in Canmore, Alberta. Registration for Alberta Alpine's largest fundraiser of the year can be done here: https://zone4.ca/reg.asp?id=6915&lan=1&cartlevel=1

The Alberta Alpine Board of Directors will announce further transitional plans later this week as details become available.

Update from AASA Athletics Director Cam Stephen
Hello All,

I hope all is well and that everyone is having a chance to enjoy some well-earned time in the sun this summer.  This will be the first instalment of a monthly update from me. The goal is to keep all informed on what is crossing the desk of the Athletics Director (AD), where and what the Alberta Ski Team is up to, and any upcoming priorities dates/ events.

AST Update

The Alberta Ski Team is keeping busy with on snow and summer strength and conditioning activities. Hood camp #1 taking place in late June and early July was successful on all accounts. Women's Head coach Brett Zagozewski was focused on developing athleticism and instinctive skiing in non-traditional environments with the goal of expanding and developing basic skiing skill sets and abilities.   Men's Head Coach Duane Baird was focused on evaluating the capacities of the Men's team with high levels of Volume and variety in non-traditional environments to start off the season. Both teams used their first opportunity on snow together to establish the all-important team chemistry that will carry the teams through the 2014/ 2015 competitive season.

The second camp which is currently in progress, will see select athletes from both the Men's and Women's AST attend another 8 days on snow working closely with the Ontario Ski Teams. Athletes not attending will remain in the gym, continuing to build the capacities required for a long and intense winter race season.  Towards the end of August the entire AST will be in Canmore for a week long dryland camp. The Dryland camp will aim to move all athletes towards their dryland goals using a variety of different environments.

AD Desk Update

With a couple days under my belt, I can safely say I am starting to settle in. I am very excited about the job, and have enjoyed the first couple of days. The handover from Brett to me is ongoing and running smoothly. Amongst my highest priorities in the short term is to finish up Race Calendars and to start to get out and meet with clubs, members, and partner organizations. I hope to have another draft of the calendar out by weeks end to give everyone an update on where we are at with the calendaring process.

I can be reached at cam@albertaalpine.ca , cell # (unchanged) at 403 688 1939, and direct office line in 403 609 4732. Please feel free to contact me any time between 900hrs - 1600hrs, Monday to Friday, during the summer months, or via email to which I will work to reply within 24 hours.

Calendar

As promised the newest version of the AASA Calendar is ready and attached below. First I wanted to say a big thank you to all of those that have entertained my phone calls in the dead heat of summer this week to assist in getting this draft finished up. This Calendar draft has been focused on the continuing development of the racing calendar. The next draft will have a more accurate look at dates and locations for AASA supported/ lead camps such as Legends Club Camps, Speed Camps, Fast and Female, and Integration camp opportunities. If there are any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to give me a call.
